Johnston Youth Football and Cheer recently wrapped up its fall season, putting an end to a fun and successful year both on and off the gridiron.
The Panthers had a big year, with all football teams reaching the playoffs. The Junior Pee Wee team reached the Super Bowl to lead the way. Headlining the cheerleading squads was the JV squad which finished second in the league overall.
The league has seen a steady climb in numbers the past two seasons for both football and cheerleading as it hopes to build a feeder system from the youth level up to Johnston High School.
“It’s awesome, the numbers are good, it’s awesome to see our flag football program developed and building numbers. It’s great to see those kids advance all the way from the Pee Wee to varsity level at the high school,” said JYF president Gary Young.
Young thanked the entire JYF community for its support and leadership this year as it enjoyed one of its best seasons to date as a program.
“We had great parent support, great coaches, strong leadership from our coaching staffs and team moms. We had great coordinators for both football and cheer that helped us achieve that goal,” Young said. “I’m proud of all the coaches and am proud of the kids. Thank you to the parents, it was a great season and a fun season. Without all them, it doesn’t happen.”
JYF will be holding its annual banquet celebrating all of its teams on Dec. 8. The league is planning on another special outing in which it will honor specifically its varsity players. The league is eyeing a January date for that event.
