Cranston co-op snaps 4-game losing streak as playoffs loom

The Cranston field hockey co-op snapped its four-game losing streak by shutting out visiting Bay View 4-0 last weekend at its homecoming matchup at Cranston Stadium.

The co-op held a slim 1-0 lead at the halftime break after getting a goal from Waimea Dodge. Cranston’s offense would take off in the second half, though, and notch three unanswered goals to run away with the win. Ella Johnsen, Aria Lee and Sara Regina all scored goals in the second half.

Attacking the outside of the field proved to be a big advantage in the second half, according to Cranston coach Matt Davis.

“They were clogging the middle, which meant that on the outside there was open real estate. They found it and it was working. We had two first time scorers, so good for them,” said Davis.

Cranston dropped its past four games and was looking to rebound as it approaches the home stretch of the regular season schedule.

“It makes a huge difference for us, gives us momentum as we head toward the playoffs. We hope to get a couple more wins here to put ourselves in better position in the rankings. We had a tough middle of the year, we lost some girls who were sick, we were down three starters. That made a huge difference. But the girls are gelling nicely and work great together as team,” Davis said.

Davis also credited goalie Maura Kitterick. Kitterick had a quiet day against Bay View with only three saves, but has been a standout all season and combined for 35 saves the previous two games leading up to the matchup.

“She’s an athlete, and had she played for all four years then she’d probably be an all-stater. She’s been unbelievable. Every other game she is getting pelted. She is going to be a big loss for us next year,” said Davis.

Cranston improved to 3-4-1 in league play with the win and took on Lincoln on the road on Tuesday. The results were not available at press time. The final regular season match will be on Thursday when it hits the road to take on Tiverton. The goal will be to finish strong and grab at least one more point, according to Davis.

“One game at a time. We have Lincoln next at Lincoln, it’s going to be tough, but we have to make it happen,” said Davis. “We want to get a win there but even if we get a tie, I’ll take it, just go in there and get that point.”
