The Police Log is a digest of reports provided by the Johnston Police, Rhode Island State Police and other departments.

SHRUB THEFT

Three shrubs valued at about $140 retail price were stolen from Central Nurseries in Johnston on April 24.

Gianna Pagliarini, daughter of owner Paul, said there isn’t a clear shot of the suspect vehicle’s license plate, but there was a dent on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Johnston Deputy Chief Joseph Razza said the department is working with Cranston Police because of a similar theft in their city.

Pagliarini said Central Nurseries was in the process of redoing its display area, which used to feature a 3- to 4-foot black metal fence. It was taken down to give a better view into the yard, but she said it will likely have to be put up again.

“Obviously we don’t like being robbed, but it’s just disappointing someone would do something like this especially with what’s going on,” Pagliarini said. “We’re a small business trying to keep everyone employed and working.” DISORDERLY CONDUCT

Patrolman Derrick Palazzo responded to the McDonald’s at 1377 Atwood Ave. in reference to a public contact the evening of April 13.

Upon arrival, Palazzo said he spoke with the calling party, who told him that he served a customer food through the drive-thru window and the customer left. He said the unknown male customer then came back through the drive-thru and said he did not receive a sandwich he ordered. The calling party said the customer was irate and used obscenities, saying, “I’ll get out of this car and [expletive] you up.”

The calling party said the man was given his chicken sandwich, at which time he continued his verbal tirade. Palazzo said the calling party told him that the man – later identified as Andre Mazzulla, 42, 71 Maple St., Johnston – opened a soft drink that was served to him and threw its contents onto the drive-thru window. The calling party said he then opened the drive-thru window and said, “You missed.”

The calling party said he was then struck in the face with the empty plastic cup by the customer, who then fled the scene. The party showed Palazzo video surveillance that corroborated the story.

Mazzulla was arrested two weeks later on the evening of April 27 on two misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and simple assault. He was released with a Third Division District Court summons to appear June 8.
