DUTY TO STOP

Patrolman David T. Slinko Jr. responded to the intersection of Atwood Avenue and Rollingwood Drive for a reported hit-and-run incident on the afternoon of March 31.

Slinko said the victim and an independent witness provided the suspect plate, and patrol located the vehicle. The operator had just reported for work on landscaping duties. The vehicle was operated by Fredy Alberto Espinoza Cabrera, 28, 129 Whittier St., Providence.

Slinko said Cabrera provided a Guatemalan ID, and a check with the Division of Motor Vehicles revealed no active registration and no active license for the operator. Cabrera was issued a Third Division District Court summons for June 8 on charges of driving without a license, third offense, and duty to stop for an accident resulting in damage to an attended vehicle.

Cabrera was also issued Johnston Municipal Court summonses for improper use of evidence or certificate of title, operation of an unregistered vehicle, duty to give information and render aid, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, first offense, failure to yield and altering height or operating a motor vehicle with an altered height. Patrolman Matthew V. Leveillee responded to a larceny of a package on the afternoon of March 30.

Upon arrival, Leveillee met with the victim, who said that at around 1:09 p.m. he received a notification from his Ring doorbell. Upon reviewing the surveillance video, he saw an unknown female party wearing all black with her face mostly obscured run up to the front porch of the residence and take a recently delivered package. The officer said the woman is then observed entering a gold vehicle and fleeing the scene. The man said the purchase was an REI sleeping bag worth $75.

On scene, Leveillee said he reviewed the video and online confirmation order. Upon seeing the footage, Leveillee recalled previous reported larcenies of packages in the surrounding area with a gold vehicle being operated by the suspects.

Due to the similarities of the vehicle used and the female suspect, Leveillee and Patrolman Richard Varan responded to City View Parkway to investigate further.

Upon arrival, Leveillee said he saw a gold vehicle bearing the same registration parked in front of the residence. In plain view, he said, was an REI box located on the floor behind the driver’s seat. The officer said they were at the front door of Renee Marcogliese, 36, 27.5 City View Parkway, Johnston.

After a brief conversation, Leveillee said Marcogliese admitted to stealing the package and produced the stolen sleeping bag. Marcogliese was arrested on a charge of larceny under $1,500. Due to current COVID-19 protocols, Marcogliese was not taken into custody and was issued a Third Division District Court summons for June 8.
