Johnston students suspended after parking lot ‘Splat ball gun’ incident

Johnston Police will not be pressing charges against six students who were allegedly playing with toy guns in a school parking lot.

"We were not alerted to the incident until the following day," Johnston Police Chief Joseph P. Razaa said Friday. "We did take a public contact report and spoke to those involved and their parents, all were juveniles.  We determined there would be no criminal charging based on our initial investigation and the matter referred to the school administration."

WPRI 12 News has reported six students have been suspended from Johnston High School following a toy gun fight in the school’s parking lot, involving “Splat ball guns, which shoot water beads.”

Some police departments have warned citizens the pellets fired from “Splatter Ball Guns” can be painful, and dangerous. Social media challenges have led to incidents where people have been hit by the water-filled pellets by strangers.

Parents of some of the students suspended at JHS however, told WPRI 12 News that the fake gun battle was a friendly exchange.
