DUI, WEAPONS POSSESSION

On June 15 at about 9:29 p.m., Patrolman Patrick Gendreau and another officer observed a motor vehicle traveling roughly 10 mph above the speed limit on Atwood Avenue and tailgating another vehicle. After pulling over, the vehicle operator told police that he was travelling home from his workplace in downtown Providence. He stated that he had “had a couple of beers after work.”

After performing poorly during field sobriety tests, the man was arrested. A search of his vehicle revealed a large closed knife in the center console measuring about 8 inches long. Once at Johnston police headquarters, the man refused to submit to a chemical test and began uttering profanities. He received a Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal Summons for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test, Intervals Between Vehicles – Following Too Close and Laned Roadway Violation. He also received verbal warnings regarding his speeding and expired vehicle registration, and was issued a District Court Summons.

DRUG POSSESSION

On June 22 at about 9:30 a.m., Patrolman Matthew Levesque and another officer were flagged down during traffic monitoring by a man who reported a suspicious vehicle parked on Cleveland Avenue with its hazard lights active. Upon approaching the vehicle, Levesque observed its male occupant hunched over the steering wheel with the driver’s side window down. After Levesque asked the man to step out of the vehicle, the man complied, whereupon a metal crack pipe fell out of his lap. There was additionally a burnt piece of aluminum foil on the passenger seat, as well as two small bags in the driver’s side door. One contained a white powdery substance, while the other contained a small, crystalized rock.

When asked, the man stated that the bags contained fentanyl. At that time he was placed under arrest, and the Johnston Fire Department was summoned to conduct a medical evaluation. The JPD advised that it is procedure to transport individuals known to be in contact with fentanyl to the hospital, regardless of whether they exhibit overdose symptoms.

A chemical test showed that the white powdery substance tested positive for cocaine. The other substance was suspected to be crack cocaine. The man is being charged with two counts of Possession of Schedule I-IV Under 10 Grams.
