The Johnston Memorial Cancer Events storied golf tournament tradition WILL continue in 2020.
Because of the COVID-19 crisis, Connecticut National Golf Club that’s located in Putnam, CT. and has been home to the JMCE’s highly-successful golf tourney was ordered to shut down by the State of Connecticut without an anticipated re-opening date thus creating a dilemma for the 13th annual event which was scheduled for Saturday, May 9.
So, weather and fewer health issues permitting, the JMCE’s 13th Annual Golf Tournament will tee off on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. at the always well-manicured Connecticut National Golf Club.
“First of all,” Chairman Vin LaFazia began “our (JMCE) committee hopes that you and your families are staying safe during this pandemic” adding “we never thought we would see something like this in our lifetime!”
Given that the JMCE - which prides itself in having raised nearly $250,000 through the 12 years for Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence by way of its highly-acclaimed golf tournaments - wanted to keep everyone safe and thus decided on postponing and not canceling the 2020 tourney.
So, the official new date for the JMCE Golf Tournament – as noted above – is Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020 beginning with what will be an unmatched combination lunch/breakfast at 10 a.ml and tee off at approximately 11 a.m. following the always-impressive opening ceremony which is always highlighted by the playing of the National Anthem.
“Unfortunately, we know the new date may not work for all of those who have already signed up to play in the tournament,” said LaFazia. “Therefore, we are offering people three different options.”
The first, of which, is no refund and moving an already registered foursome to Oct. 4.
LaFazia said the second option is receiving a refund of $90 and commemorative tournament jacket that were ordered as each group of golfers signed up. He noted Option 3 is no refund and receiving a jacket along with a coupon for 18 holes of golf with a cart – good weekdays only – at Connecticut National along with a $10 pro shop credit.
“We are asking the captain of each foursome to take the lead and talk to his or her group and make a decision then contact either Linda or myself,” LaFazia went on while listing his telephone number (401) 233-2564 or email at Fazgilly54@gmail.com and let them know their decision on options one to three.
In a related JMCE statement the committee, which began its 2020 fundraising campaign back on Jan. 1 by raising $3,500 via its annual Polar Golf Tourney at Glocester Country Club, wanted it known: “that through this pandemic we are strongly committed to keeping our fundraising promise to Hasbro Children’s Hospital.”
Thus, Linda LaFazia added: “We are proud to loin Hasbro Children’s Hospital for our second 5-year commitment of $100,000 to renovate two more hospital rooms and so far this year we have raised $21,200!”
That total came in form of $3,500 from Polar Golf; $3,000 from the Salzillo Memorial Game Dinner; A $7,500 donation from the Cavanaugh Company; $6,000 from the generous major golfs sponsors and $1,220 in memory of Elena Bucci.”
And, as LaFazia emphasized: “On behalf of all the family and committee members THANK YOU for your continued support as we remember of our late friends Sal Gelsomino, Anna Mazzulla, Laura DeAngelis, Raymond Johnson, John Furia and Frances Gallo who were the building blocks for what have been many mighty and marvelous storied successes in our on-going efforts to help children who have been stricken with cancer.”
