Senior ‘Spotlite’

‘It was the pool table’

Posted

The Johnston Senior Center ‘Spotlite’ this week shines on Ken Rawlinson, 82, who has been coming to the center for the past ten years.

It was the “pool table” that attracted him initially to Center, and he has been coming twice a week since that time. Ken moved to Johnston with his family in 1969and has lived in that same house for over fifty years. He and his brother operated a tax accounting business here in town. He has been enjoying retirement for the past seventeen years. He recalls visiting the El Marocco, many years ago, and has been coming here continually.

He enjoys the many social activities that are essential after retirement, such as having breakfast at the same location with a group of friends, seven days per week. Here at the Center, the game of pool is “serious business”, but the competition is lots of fun for all. When Ken has spare time, he is exercising here in town, or can be seen shopping at local markets for the local “food pantries”. Ken also enjoys spending time trading on the stock market.

Here at the senior center, we have something for everyone. Certainly, Ken, is one of our members who have made the most of life as an older adult. Keeping fit physically, mentally, and socially, is the key to a happy older life.  Ken says the day isn’t complete until it ends with a glass of good quality Scotch. Good advice from a gentlemen who has enjoyed 60 years of marriage.
