It was a scramble, but it opened

PUTTING IT BACK TOGETHER: Winman social studies teacher Anibal Raposo had pretty much readied his room for students by Friday when he got a visit from school director of capital projects and construction Steve Gothberg. Gothberg assured him renovations to the school include new windows and a HVAC system.

GETTING READY: Winman science teacher Cathy Hawthorne-Kocak, who was named last school year’s Warwick Teacher of the Year, readies her classroom for the return of students. She found a wall in place of a room divider, which she said is an improvement, new lights and was thrilled to learn she will be getting a white board.

The opening of Winman Middle School that is undergoing extensive renovations including a HVAC system, new roof, windows and flooring in some sections, was delayed last week in order to complete the redesign of a sprinkler system that failed to meet code. Work on the sprinkler system required the removal of ceiling tiles and rewiring that postponed the return of furniture removed for other parts of the work. By Friday teachers returned to the school to ready classrooms to open Tuesday. Renovations will continue during the academic year with heating and air conditioning scheduled to be operational this month and window replacements ongoing as they are delivered. Overall, the renovations are projected to be completed by new summer and cost $13 million. Superintendent Lynn Dambruch has sought a waiver from the state Department of Education so that students won’t have to make up the days lost by the delayed opening. (Warwick Beacon photos)
