Getting Ready for Henri

IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK: Marguerite Ofria Pile and her husband Wells Pile cut short their cruise aboard their 36-foot trawler Amphitrite to play it safe and return to the yacht club. This reporter assumed they were cleaning out their boat in preparation of the storm. But no, the dock cart was filled with laundry. The name of the boat offered a lesson in Greek mythology. She was a sea goddess and wife of Poseidon and the queen of the sea. As the tale goes, Wells said Poseidon was highly desirous of the beautiful Amphitrite, but she only agreed to become his wife if they equally shared power.

A FIRST AND NOW THIS: As the recent owners of the 33-foot Sea Ray Nauti-Dreamz that they usually keep at a mooring, John and Susan Bilodeau were pleased to have a slip to ride out the storm. They powered up their inflatable to make a trip out to the mooring to check on lines.

While the parking lot was full, the docks at the Rhode Island Yacht Club were nearly deserted Saturday. A club crew checked dock lines in preparation of Henri forecast to arrive in the early morning hours Sunday. There was greater activity at the club’s upper deck, where, as member Art Breaut explained, the staff prepared for a dinner to follow a regatta being sailed off Ohio Ledge in Narragansett Bay. Breaut thought the club was well prepared for the storm with its docks and pilings designed to handle a storm surge and its basin tucked into Stillhouse Cove. (Herald photos)
