Hendricken ties rival La Salle to remain unbeaten

The Hawks and the La Salle Academy Rams played to a 1-1 tie on Thursday night at Bishop Hendricken High School during a Division I soccer showdown.

“It was fun,” Hendricken head coach Mike Rooney said. “A little nerve-racking if you’re the coach, but it was a typical La Salle/Hendricken game. I think in the first half they might have had better opportunities than we did, but in the second half, I think we had more than them. So, if it’s a tie, it’s a tie.”

Max Jackson, a junior, scored for La Salle during the 27th minute after an assist from Eoin Stansfield, a senior, and that gave the Rams a 1-0 lead.

Then, Jacob Coates evened the score at 1, during the 69th minute, when the junior forward scored with a header, following a corner kick from Landon Picillo, a senior midfielder.

“Jacob’s an exciting player,” Rooney said. “He’s got skill and he’s got speed. He’s got everything going for him and he’s going to be one of the top players in the state.”

“And Landon’s been providing goals and assists,” Rooney said. “I believe he’s the leading scorer in the state. But today he was the provider. So, it’s a team sport. Someone’s got to kick, someone’s got to cross it, and someone’s got to score it. So, it was good.”

Brendan Sisson, the Hawks senior goalkeeper, made eight saves on the night, while La Salle junior goalkeeper Nikolaos Panagos stopped five shots.

“He just came back,” Rooney said of Sisson. “He was injured for the first couple of games. So, he had a nice game today.”

On Saturday, the Hawks tied Moses Brown 2-2 for their third tie of the season and remained undefeated with a league record of 5-0-3.

The Hawks played again at Portsmouth on Wednesday, but that score was unavailable at press time. Hendricken will host North Kingstown (9-0) next, this Saturday at 1 p.m. in what looks to be a battle of unbeaten teams.

And it could also be a D-I championship preview.

“We’re trying,” Rooney said. “We’re taking each game, and the games are getting harder now as people start to learn about our offense and stuff like that. So, it’s going to be difficult, but yeah, I think if we keep working the way we are, we’re going to be there.”
