Hawks look to finish job

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Bishop Hendricken hockey team has picked up where it left off last season, winning its first three league this winter and getting a 4-1 exhibition win over rival La Salle last week in Smithfield.

Will Cavanagh led the Hawks with a pair of goals while Ryan Staples and Drew Gayman added scores of their own.

Last year, the Hawks were slated to take on Mount St. Charles in the Division I finals, but the series was called off due to the pandemic and each team was assigned co-champion.

Hendricken is excited to get back out there in front of fans and have been getting contributions not only from its senior core, but from its large sophomore class as well.

“It’s a great start and the kids are having a blast, and the fact that we can play in front of fans makes it even more fun. We’ve got a great group of kids, great leadership, it’s a great atmosphere,” said coach Mike Soscia. “We have a healthy balance right now. It’s not just one line, not one aspect. We’re getting timely goals and are making big saves. From top to bottom, it has been a complete team effort.”

The exhibition against La Salle felt far from a meaningless game, as the two clubs battled inside of a packed house with a playoff atmosphere. The Hawks were in control from start to finish and skated away with the lopsided win.

“It was very encouraging and it was very fun. It was our first real big game in a year and a half. Although it was a scrimmage, the kids really looked forward to it and they got to play in front of 1,000 fans. From there, they let the things that we have worked on in practice take over,” said Soscia.

Hendricken is getting set to drop the puck on its regular season slate after the holiday break. Its game against West Warwick on Friday was postponed, so the Hawks will be shelved another few days.

After getting short changed in last year’s finals, the Hawks are excited to make another run toward a title.

“Words can’t describe how excited they really are. Ice hockey is the only sport in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League that hasn’t had a championship in two years. Two years ago we lost to Mount in the playoffs, the last year was taken away from us,” said Soscia. “They are very hungry and they know what they have to do, they know what it takes.”
