Hawks top Mount

The Bishop Hendricken hockey team rolled past Mount St. Charles in two games last week to advance to the Division I Semifinals.

The Hawks would take Game 1 by a score of 2-1.
Will Cavanagh and Drew Gayman scored for the Hawks in the victory.

Hendricken would wrap up a 4-1 win at Adelard in Game 2 with goals coming from Gayman, Ryan Staples, Nick Defelice and Colton Whitfield.

Hendricken’s top lines have been coming on as of late and led the charge against the powerhouse Mounties in the quarters.

“We’re getting a 1-2 punch from our first and second lines. The second line was struggling for a bit to find a rhythm but they’re starting to find their groove and what better time to find it then right now in the playoffs,” said Hendricken coach Mike Soscia.

The Hawks were excited to get the series win over Mount, who has been a thorn in their side for the past few seasons.

Two years ago, Mount eliminated Hendricken in the semifinals.

The two were set to rematch in the state finals last year, but were named co-champions due to the pandemic canceling the series.

“The boys had that in the back of their minds all year. We have a team that can win and they know that. They play with a purpose and they outshot them almost 3-1 in both games which is good.

We have depth, we have four lines, we have defensemen, our goalie is playing really well right now,” Soscia said.

The Hawks will need to bring their best in the semis, as they are set to take on top-seeded LaSalle, who is undefeated in league play this season.

The Rams beat the Hawks 6-2 in their first meeting then picked up a 3-0 win the second time around. Two of those goals were scored on power-plays.

Being aggressive on offense and staying out of the penalty box will be key to pull off the upset, according to Soscia.

“We can’t take dumb penalties. Year after year, they have had a consistently strong power-play.

Stay out of the box and play 5-on-5 hockey, we’re very tough to beat 5-on-5,” said Soscia. “We’ve got to work hard, get pucks to the net, and try to beat (La Salle’s) Max Cute, who is a very good goalie. This is going to be a great series.”
