Greek food fair, Christmas bazaar this weekend

One of the state’s most popular eateries will open this weekend at 165 Oaklawn Ave. in Cranston.

The Taverna, as it’s known, will be located inside the Rev. Peter G. Mihailides Center serving the same-style Greek food that’s featured every September during the Church of the Annunciation’s Cranston Greek Festival; however, there will be much, much more than Spanikopita, Souvlaki, Lamb and caloric creations like Baklava, Koularakia, Kourambidies, Melomakarona and other pastries.

For the first time since 2019 – when the Covid crisis wiped out many social events – the Good Samaritan Greek Orthodox Philoptochos Society of the Church of the Annunciation will host its two-day fun and food filled Greek Food Fair and Christmas Bazaar that, through the years, has raised more than $100,000 for Boston Children’s Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Meeting Street School and other charities.

In keeping with tradition, Philoptochos Society members have worked as hard preparing for this Saturday and Sunday as they did baking for the 2022 Cranston Greek Festival.

The event will be held Saturday (Nov. 5) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday (Nov. 6) from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Demetrakas Hall which will be filled with booths featuring festive gift baskets Bazaar Chairlady Georgia Pappas said will offer an array of themed baskets valued from $50 to $100; all that will be raffled.

There will also be vintage treasures such as fine and costume jewelry (necklaces, bracelets and earrings) as well as a Christmas Card Raffle featuring gift cards to markets, restaurants and stores.

Pappas said the Christmas Corner will offer beautiful ornaments, stockings and decorations for the holiday and there will be a Penny Social with gifts for the whole family.

Another special feature is the famed Agora – a.k.a. Greek Marketplace – offering delicacies such as Feta Cheese, Loucaniko (Greek sausage), olive oil, aprons, towels, oven mitts, towel sets and more.

So, if you’re looking to do some early Christmas shopping or simply enjoy a special-cooked Greek lunch or dinner, plan on visiting The Greek Food Fair and Christmas Bazaar that also benefits the hungry, homeless, lonely, desperate, Sunday School and countless charities in-and-around the state.

As Pappas pointed out that “Philoptochos means ‘Friends of the Poor’ and on behalf of our membership and Bazaar Committee we thank you for your continued support and we hope you’ll visit us this weekend.”
