To the Editor:
State Rep. Anastasia P. Williams (D-Providence) doesn’t think much of Providence police officers. In fact, she thinks most of them are the devil incarnate (“The Law Enforcement Officers Accountability Act Must be passed,” April 22). I do not share her low opinion of these fine men and women.
I will admit that, like most law-abiding citizens, I don’t have much day-to-day interaction with law enforcement professionals. But when I have had occasion to summon police, I have been thankful for their willingness to risk their safety to protect mine.
Rep. Anastasia Williams lacks that sense of gratitude. She seems to have a race-based police persecution complex that blinds her to other realities. That is why I suspect, based on her expressed hostility, that the real purpose of her proposed legislation is to injure both police morale and readiness.
I think her indictment of local law enforcement is also part and parcel of the Democratic Party’s larger effort to demonize police across the nation. Their war on cops must not be allowed to continue unchallenged.
The progressive Democrats divisive and discordant anti-cop and anti-American rhetoric should be vigorously shouted down by all patriotic voices. At the same time, we should join together and give a grateful shout-out to the men and women in blue who daily fulfill their pledge to serve and protect.
