A spray painting vandal was recently arrested after leaving his mark at Rainone Gym on Mill Street.
Joshua Carey, 29, of Providence, was arrested Dec. 30 and charged with vandalism and defacing private property following an investigation by the Johnston Police, according to Chief Joseph Razza.
On Nov. 19, 2020, officers were dispatched to the gym for a vandalism complaint. There they spoke with a complainant, who stated that there is an ongoing problem with graffiti and vandalism at the town-owned gym. A routine inspection of the facility conducted that morning revealed the words “Puke” and “Jerk” freshly painted in black and white bubble lettering on the outside walls.
The police then referenced a suspicious person report, completed earlier that morning, from officers who patrolled the nearby area. Officers reported that they observed a suspicious male, later identified as Carey, throw two cans of spray paint over a fence in an attempt to conceal suspicious activity he was engaged in.
Carey allegedly told officers he discarded the cans in fear of getting in trouble.
The cans were recovered, but officers were unable to locate any graffiti nearby in the dark and Carey was free to go at that time without incident or charges.
Based upon the circumstances, a warrant was drawn for Casey. He was arrested by the Warwick Police Department on Dec. 30 and transported to Johnston on the warrant. Casey was arraigned in Third Division District Court and pleaded no contest to the vandalism offenses. He received a one-year suspended sentence with one year of probation, and is additionally being required to pay restitution for the damages.
