Fung is an amiable guy, but he won’t stand up to Republican leadership

To the Editor,

Many in Rhode Island can agree that Allan Fung is an amiable guy. He has a unique background and was, by many accounts, a successful mayor. Fung is consistently described as a moderate Republican, but now as a Congressional candidate his public stand on issues has evolved to be extremely conservative in order to align himself with his party.

Here are two examples: While Fung was mayor he could say he supported a woman’s choice regarding abortion and he could say he supported banning military style weapons.  But what happened when he ran for Governor? He could not run as a Republican with those middle of the road positions, which by the way are supported by a majority of Rhode Islanders. He had to “evolve” his positions to get the support needed to win his primary. He converted to Catholicism and now won’t support women to make their own health choices; he takes direction from the Bishop who opposes abortion in all circumstances. On guns, he is now beholden to the NRA and their extreme “guns everywhere” stand.

These positions are at odds with most Rhode Islanders and he lost the general election for Governor as a result.

Fung has not, and will not, stand up to his party. He has been forced to acquiesce to a radical Republican minority who have overtaken the Republican Party, both here in Rhode Island and nationally. His cheery disposition cannot counter his allegiance to the Republican Party.

Take a close look at the Republican Party position to vote to create “Second Amendment Sanctuary” cities in close to a dozen towns in Rhode Island. These votes, taken by Republican led Town councils, direct their police Chiefs not to enforce gun laws on the books -- a dangerous and misguided “value” quietly overtaking the Republican Party. As a former mayor, would Fung direct his Chief to NOT comply with the law? Possibly. Will he stand up to the NRA in Washington, which continues to push for laws to allow individuals to carry guns everywhere without getting background checks? No, he won’t.

Allan is an amiable guy, but he won’t stand up to the Republican leadership here in Rhode Island to oppose extremists and he won’t have the courage to do it in Washington. He can say he is a moderate, but it won’t matter because if he gets to Washington, he will don his MAGA hat and vote accordingly.

Yes because choice is important, you know "My body, My choice". The Second Amendment reconizes a person's Right to protect their Life (another Creator given Right recognized in the Declaration of Independence), any way I choose, including using arms of my choice.

"My body, My choice" unless it is to get an un tested vaccine.

"My choice" to send my kids to any school I choose.

"My choice" whether I want to plant a garden during Covid.

"My choice" to risk going out to dinner and the resturaunt owner's "choice" wether to be open.

By the way its not the woman's body, provable with a DNA test. You know "science".

Explain to me again about "My choice".

I don't need a MAGA candidate what we need are Constitutionalists that believe in putting the United States and U.S. Citizens first.
