To the Editor,

For all of mankind’s advancements we still have not changed in terms of handling our emotions since the days of the ancients. We can produce amazing technology, but use it for war at the same time. We can also create medicines that address illnesses, but still have pharmaceutical companies pump out inordinate amounts of opioids which leads to countless deaths. I write this at a moment when Russia has invaded Ukraine. Humans are complex creatures.

We place far too little time, money and effort on our social/emotional/mental health sides. While Americans have created a society that has much to be proud of – gun violence, racial issues, addictive disorders and the proliferation of mental health concerns (many of which are exacerbated by how we relate to each other) abound. Covid-19 has made matters worse.

As we watch the horrific images coming from Ukraine say a prayer for those in harm’s way. After doing so, try reflecting on how so many of us say, and do, damaging things to each other. Sure it’s not war, but over the last few years we have placed so much distance between ourselves over politics, tribalism, race and fear. Perhaps the world gets changed in the homes of individual souls.

Recently, the East Greenwich Town Manager and Council advocated for increased funding to address Mental Health. Additional financial support will be provided from an Opioid Settlement. All of this is good news. All of this puts people at the forefront. All of this is so necessary. Changes begin at the local level. People must be a priority.

At a recent vigil supporting Ukraine, and peace, I witnessed a tremendous outpouring of love, commitment and hope. Also evident at this gathering was the willingness to get involved and make changes. Words must be accompanied by actions if we are to make a difference.

War, addiction and prejudice all can seem so complex. There are many factors that lead to these dynamics. At the local level let us begin with mental health and social emotional considerations. Let us also begin by recognizing that supporting each other is imperative. Helping those in need, as well as reaching out with understanding, can lead to powerful changes. Starting with our own hearts, and minds, is the first step towards making the world a little better. Maybe it is Pollyannish, but beginning is often the most difficult step.
