Fighting for Rowan

The Pilgrim girls soccer team celebrated its senior night last week prior to its game against Coventry. Not only did the team honor its seniors, but it also recognized another local.

Rowan Shaw, a 2-year-old Warwick resident, has been battling cancer since January and gaining statewide recognition and support.

The Pilgrim girls decided to join the fight and dedicate their senior night to him.

The team wore purple shirts to honor Rowan while also collecting monetary donations throughout the game toward the cause. Rowan and his parents, David and Kendall, made the trip to the game in front of a packed house to watch the Lady Pats roll to the 9-0 win to maintain sole possession of first place in Division I South.

“My wife found the story on Facebook and pitched it to me, then I pitched it to the girls.

We are always trying to find things like this to do. They wanted to dedicate their night to helping Rowan,” said Pilgrim coach Tom Flanders.

The girls were excited to help Rowan and to spread awareness of his fight.

“We’re really happy he’s here and between the shirts that we’re wearing and the donations, all of that, we really just want to give him a nice night. That’s the goal,” said Flanders.

“The girls are pumped, they’re thrilled, they want to go out and have a great performance.

They’re focused, but they also know that it goes beyond sport to be able to take an event like this and turn it into something positive.”
