Falcons looking to regain form

The Cranston West football team got back to work last week as it looks to regain its form heading into the 2022 season.

The Falcons had a down year in 2021, finishing with just two wins overall and struggling to consistently find answers while its young players got their feet wet.

Now, heading into 2022, the Falcons return much of the same lineup on each side of the ball and are looking to make their presence felt in the new Division II group.

“It’s been great. We have a lot of guys that have some experience this year which helps us. The upperclassmen have done a great job of helping the younger guys coming up and they have really embraced the idea that they need to be leaders,” said head coach Tom Milewski.

West returns starting quarterback Matt DeFusco as well as running backs Marcus Chung and Dimitri LeBlanc. Domenic Schiavulli is also back in the receiving mix, while the Falcons return their same defensive secondary.

“It’s good that we have most of our starting offense and defensive back, the chemistry is already there. We just have to put the little things together and be a team,” Schiavulli said.

“We have the same squad that we’ve had since freshman year. Now that we are all grown up I think we are going to be pretty good,” added LeBlanc, who is a captain this season along with Schiavulli and Chung.

The Falcons plan on running the same scheme as they did last year on each side of the ball, but this time around, are looking for better production with experience. Milewski has been pleased with his three captains’ leadership as the Falcons look to take the next step toward getting back on top.

“Our three captains have really stepped up for us, had a great summer, and they’ve set the bar high. We’re hoping that the added experience from last year will help these kids. Our ideas are going to be the same but with higher expectations. We just need to keep gelling,” Milewski said.

After a down year last season, Chung is looking forward to bouncing back as a senior and feels that the team has some unfinished business.

“(Last year’s struggles) have motivated us, the only way to go is up from here,” Chung said. “We definitely have a chip on our shoulder here, teams are already crossing us off their list. We’re excited.”
