West falls to Oakers

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Cranston West football team fell to visiting Coventry 34-19 in the teams’ Injury Fund exhibition last Friday evening.

Braydan Stetson led the Falcons on offense with two rushing scores while quarterback Matt DeFusco connected with Marcus Chung on a touchdown pass.

With the Injury Fund game serving as a dress rehearsal to the regular season, West head coach Tom Milewski was happy to see the roster solidify itself as things kick off for real this week.

“We had a few of our questions answered both offensively and defensively which is a good thing, although we do still have a few holes to fill. The good thing about the Injury Fund game this year was that it gave us an opportunity to see what we had under the lights on a Friday night. We have some work to do, but we’re back at it and we are ready to head into the season,” said Milewski.

The Falcons will be hosting West Warwick on Friday. The Wizards moved up from Division II as part of the statewide realignment.

“They’ve got a new coach and they get after it. They played well against Toll Gate (at the Injury Fund game). They come right at you, so it will be a good physical test for us. They come right at you the way Coventry came right at us. It’s good, it shows you what you have to work on and makes your guys play with that same kind of intensity. It should be a good measuring stick for us,” Milewski said.

Like many other teams, West will be squaring off against some unfamiliar foes this season. Milewski believes that the new landscape will not be a factor for the players as much as it will be for the coaching staff.

“I don’t think that it affects the kids as much because each week, we only talk about the team that we are going up against. From a coaching standpoint, you try to figure a few things out as the season goes on, who is who, who did what. Kids are kids, they are on social media and I’m sure they look into it, but we really only focus on the team at hand each week,” said Milewski.

As the Falcons get set for their home opener, they are looking forward to having a full crowd at their new field as it was against Coventry.

“It was a great atmosphere. Having the student body back, the red storm, seeing parents in the stands, it was beautiful,” Milewski said. “In the spring, we had restrictions on the fans in the stands, but now that we’re back to almost normal, having the energy from the crowd was great to see.”
