Sharp-shooting Durante leading Knights

Former Johnston High standout and current CCRI basketball player Dylan Durante has gotten off to a strong start this season, along with the Knights squad that has started the season with a 7-2 record.

The sophomore guard has taken his game to the next level this season, averaging over 50 percent from three-point range and 11.4 points per game overall.

“I have to give it to our coach, (CCRI) Coach (Rick) Harris has been drawing up some really good plays. He wants me to shoot the ball, he has confidence in me shooting the ball, and that is what has led me to getting off to a strong start this season. The other guards have been looking to me too, they’ve been telling me to shoot, shoot, shoot this season, which has given me a lot of confidence,” said Durante.

Shooting has always been a big part of Durante’s game and although it has carried him to the top of the CCRI roster, he is still looking to sharpen other areas of his performance to ensure he is prepared for a higher division next season.

“I’ve always been a shooter, I have been a shooter my whole life. I have had coaches that have wanted me to expand my game, every offseason I try to get better, but shooting is definitely my No. 1 strong suit,” said Durante. “I want to work on my leadership and be a leader for this team. I also want to work on my communication, I have been buying into defense more, just every aspect of the game I want to improve and I will have to improve in order to play at the college level. I am never satisfied.”

The Knights have lofty goals this season as a unit and Durante figures to be right in the middle of those plans. CCRI’s depth and competitiveness will be key moving forward, according to Durante.

“We have some really good freshmen like Mike Gamble for example, he is currently leading the team in scoring. We some really good returning sophomores, we have some good big guys, we just have really good depth and run 10 or 11 deep,” said Durante. “Collectively, we just need to continue to come to practice and work hard. We are always working hard at practice, always competing.”
