Sophomore Justin Dorsey (Warwick, R.I.) placed seventh as the Rhode Island College men’s cross country team competed at the Connecticut College Invitational, held at Harkness Park on Saturday afternoon.  

RIC placed sixth (15 teams) with a team score of 151.0. Allegheny won the invitational with a team score of 72.0.

The race was an 8k and there were 132 runners at the event.

Dorsey finished seventh (26:31.20). Senior Andre Solomon-Messier (North Providence, R.I.) placed 15th (26:52.40). Senior Austin Michael (Swansea, Mass.) finished 32nd (27:31.50).

Freshman Dante DiGregorio (Smithfield, R.I.) placed 46th (27:59.0). Freshman Aiden Powers (Smithfield, R.I.) placed 51st (28:23.60).

Sophomore Mahari Nayte (Providence, R.I.) finished 69th (29:25.80). Freshman Owen Smith (Providence, R.I.) placed 122nd (34:22.50).

Lisi named LEC Player of Week

Rhode Island College senior Jenna Lisi (Cranston, R.I.) was named the Little East Women’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week. She shares this week’s honor with Bridgewater State sophomore Madeline Von Ruden (Ashley Falls, Mass.).

This is the third time this season that Lisi has received this award. She went 2-0 at both No. 1 singles and doubles in a 1-1 week for the Anchorwomen. Lisi is currently 9-0 at No. 1 singles and 11-0 at No. 1 doubles on the season.

CCRI volleyball stays hot

The Community College of Rhode Island won its second consecutive NJCAA Division III Region XXI Women’s Volleyball Tournament Sunday with wins over Northern Essex Community College in the semifinals and Massasoit Community College in the championship match.

The top-seeded Knights beat No. 4 Northern Essex 25-19, 25-18, 25-14 in the semis and then held on for a 3-2 win over No. 3 seed Massasoit by scores of 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 17-15 in a thrilling championship finale.

The Knights advance to the 2022 NJCAA DIII Volleyball Northeast District Championship beginning this Saturday at home on the Flanagan Campus with an opportunity to advance to the NJCAA DIII National Tournament. The Knights, who finished 11-1 during the regular season to earn the top seed in the regional tournament, also won the Region XXI championship in 2021 before falling short in the districts.

Freshman Madison Dessert (Coventry, RI) led the Knights’ attack in the championship, finishing with a team-high 16 kills and seven service while sophomore co-captain Madison Capwell (Coventry, RI) – No. 1 in the nation this year in service aces per set – added 13 kills and four digs. Freshman Kaylie Cabral (Tiverton, RI) led the Knights with 11 service aces and sophomore co-captain Kelsey Conway (Coventry, RI) capped an all-around solid performance with two kills, four service aces, and a pair of digs.

In the semis against Northern Essex, Conway finished with four service aces, two kills, and seven digs while Capwell added team-highs in digs (12) and kills (10). Freshman Adriana Ortiz (Providence, RI) led the Knights with 11 digs.

Dating back to last October, the Knights have won 19 of 22 matches, including the postseason.

Knights reach playoffs

The Community College of Rhode Island men’s soccer team has its sights set on a regional title beginning in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Division III Region XXI Men’s Soccer. Tournament.

Following a 4-6-1 regular season under 13-year head coach Gabe Toro, the Knights are the No. 3 seed in this year’s tournament and hosted No. 6 seed MassBay Community on Tuesday at Macomber Stadium in Central Falls, RI.

The top two seeds, No. 1 Roxbury Community College and No. 2 Bunker Hill Community College, have automatic byes to the semifinals, which begin Saturday. The winner of Tuesday’s CCRI-MassBay game draws the No. 2 Bulldogs at Bunker Hill in Massachusetts. The championship match is Sunday.

After a slow start in 2022, the Knights split their final four games of the regular season. They beat MassBay 5-1 on September 20. The Knights advanced to the finals of last year’s tournament and are chasing their first Region XXI title since 2001.

This year’s team is led by sophomore twin brothers Juan Barrios and Roy Barrios, both from Pawtucket, RI, who led the Knights with eight goals, five assists, and 21 points apiece. Freshmen goalkeepers Brady Linfield (Burrillville, RI) and Lucas Petrarca (Coventry, RI) split time in net this year with Linfield earning eight starts and finishing with a team-best 2.13 goals against average and a pair of shutouts.

McKenna leads Knights to win

The Community College of Rhode Island women’s soccer team posted its fourth shutout of the season Monday, beating Springfield Technical Community College 9-0 behind five goals from freshman Kelsey McKenna (West Greenwich, RI) and three from freshman Angelica Morales (Pawtucket, RI).

McKenna’s five goals fell just two shy of the single-game record set by Kat Raposa in 2018. With the win, the Knights are now 4-3 with two regular-season games remaining, the first of which comes Wednesday at Holyoke Community College at 4 pm.

The Knights scored all nine goals in the opening half with McKenna scoring the first four before Morales recorded her hat trick within a nine-minute span, culminating with her third goal of the game at the 29-minute mark. Freshman Jenna Groccia (Cranston, RI) scored the Knights’ ninth and final goal at 36:00 minutes.

Freshmen Madison Borges (Smithfield, RI) and Abigail Cahill (Cranston, RI) each had four assists and goalkeeper Bailey Patton (Charlestown, RI) stopped all seven shots she faced to earn her fourth shutout of the season.
