Don’t send someone to D.C. who will weaken gun laws

To the Editor,

Did you know firearms are now the number 1 killer of children and teens in America? This is beyond unacceptable in a civilized society. Our children are afraid to go to school for fear of being shot. According to Education Week, there have been 40 school shootings this year that resulted in injuries or death, the most in a single year since the group began tracking such incidents in 2018. edweek.org/leadership/school-shootings-this-year-how-many-and-where/2022/01

With this in mind, you can imagine why I was very disappointed to see the Herald’s endorsement of Mayor Allan Fung for our Second Congressional District seat. He has received an A rating from the National Rifle Association consistently, he does not support an assault weapons ban (over 70 percent of Rhode Islanders do (ricagv.org/2020-poll/) and he has demonstrated he will fall in line with the Republican agenda of more guns and less regulation of guns. It is immoral that we would consider electing someone that does not support gun safety, which is public safety.

I moved my family back to Cranston last year because I love Rhode Island and it’s my home. I am proud of the work done by state gun safety advocates (many are volunteers), the legislature and executive office holders in passing gun sense laws that keep our state safer. So to send someone to Washington D.C. who will work to weaken gun laws makes no sense. It’s not what’s best for our children and families. So Allan Fung may have “endeared” himself to folks in our area, but this is a matter of life and death, so whether or not he is a nice guy is irrelevant.

I am supporting Seth Magaziner. He has stood with gun safety advocates for years and will best represent my values and Rhode Island values in Congress.

Let's be honest "number 1 killer of children and teens". Children? Only when you count them in with the teens. A majority of the teens killed are gang members in depressed areas. You can look this up on the CDC site. You claim your candidate stands with gun safety advocates, yet banning firearms is not gun safety, education is. Just like drug, *** and driver's education that we do in schools. Banning firearms doen't keep firearms out of the criminal's hands, you know who that leaves? The law abiding Citizen. Police have no responsibility for your safety unless you're in their custody, DeShaney vs. Winnebago and Town of Castle Rock vs. Gonzales.

Death by any incident is always tragic, murderers don't care what they use to kill you. they're not concerned if the gun is legal or not and would perfer you not have a gun. This is a crime problem not a firearms problem. 6 people died when Darrell E. Brooks drove his vehicle into the annual Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, United States. I don't hear anything about banning automatic transmissions.
