Diggs to coach at RIC next winter

After three seasons at the helm, Cranston East girls basketball coach Jhamal Diggs will be moving on to the next chapter of his career, accepting the position of assistant coach at Rhode Island College for this coming basketball season.

Diggs, 28, leaves behind a program in which he rejuvenated in a short span as one of the state’s youngest coaches. After multiple down seasons, Diggs would take over and guide the Bolts back to the playoffs in his second year and again in his third season. The Bolts reached the quarterfinals each trip and went a combined 15-11 in the regular season.

Now, Diggs will have a chance to coach at the collegiate level as he steps up to help the Anchorwomen.

“My mission and goal was to establish a culture at East in which players would be able to go on to play in college. I started to build a good relationship with (RIC coach) Jenna Cosgrove and spontaneously she reached out to me and said, ‘I want you to be my assistant.’ I initially said no, but then I re-evaluated it, talked to some family members, I met with her, and I decided to make the decision. It’s never the right time, but it was definitely a role that will help me in the future,” said Diggs, who hopes to one day be a full-time coach.

Although Diggs will be second in command at RIC, he is excited to continue to learn and coach at a higher level of competition.

“I’m looking forward to learning and to soaking up all the experiences that we’re about to have. To get to where I want to be, I still have a lot to learn and these experiences are going to help. Coaching kids at the next level and working with Coach Jenna,” Diggs said.

Diggs’ style of coaching will remain the same at RIC as it was at East. He hopes to be a players-first leader that focuses on the intangibles.

“Just having a good relationship with my players, being a players’ coach,” said Diggs of his goals. “Trying to bring out the best in my players and help their confidence. The X’s and O’s will come, but it all starts with their attitude and integrity on the court. Those are little things that could turn into big things.”
