To the Editor,
Margaret Porter makes perfect sense. In her recent letter, she points out a simple fact about violence in our society: “Weapons don’t kill people. People do.”(“Mental Health institutions needed”, July 21)
Porter is right. Inanimate objects like guns, hammers, knives, or even speeding SUVs do not intentionally kill people; individuals using them maliciously do.
Demonizing guns is a diversion. Stricter gun control laws only disarm law abiding citizens. These laws do not deter the perpetrators of violent crimes who habitually ignore them.
Locking up guns won’t lessen violent crime. Locking up those who engage in violent behavior will.
Violent criminals should be incarcerated. Violent individuals with unstable mental health issues need to be institutionalized.
Margaret Porter demonstrates common sense. I wish our elected officials would do the same.
