Dangerous duty

The fact that fire apparatus including ladder trucks and rescue vehicles were parked on Simmonsville Avenue in Johnston last Thursday morning created quite the buzz from residents and motorists, some of whom stopped to inquire what was going on.

“No need to be alarmed,” Richard Boehm, a veteran battalion chief with the Johnston Fire Department, responded to the queries. “Richard DelFino, who owns this property, is having this house leveled and was kind enough to offer it for our training session.”

For several hours, firefighters wearing full gear and carrying equipment participated in an impressive display of training that Boehm explained “centered around and deals with vertical ventilation and breaching walls and windows for victim removal or firefighter evacuation.”
