CWLL wraps up spring, ready for summer

By ALEX SPONSELLER Cranston Western Little League recently wrapped up its 2021 spring season and is excited to see the return of this summer’s All-Star tournaments.

It was an eventful 2021 for the league, which is beginning to get back to normalcy after last year’s summer season that was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elmwood Sports won the Majors Division; the league handed out the Michael P. Varrato Scholarship Award to Mike Bogosian, Caleb Harris and Jason Patalano; and David Gargaro and Aram Garabedian were inducted into the CWLL Hall of Fame.

The league also held its first annual golf tournament at the Cranston Country Club in June in efforts to raise revenue. The tournament was a big success, as 120 golfers made the trip to hit the links and show their support.

“It was a good spring and we were fortunate to not have any issues regarding COVID. And now here we are for All-Stars,” said CWLL president Steve Piscopiello.

Piscopiello was thrilled to see the turnout for the golf tournament and hopes to see it become a yearly tradition.

“I’d be remiss to not mention Billy Guglietta. Billy said that he wanted to (hold the tournament) and we told him to run with it. He had an aggressive team with the committee that he put together. They helped raise a lot of the money that we had lost in revenue over the past two seasons. We were able to get a lot of our own back, we had three past presidents, past players, it was really well attended. Billy deserves a lot of credit for it as does his committee that worked really hard,” said Piscopiello, “because it was so well attended, I would say (we will do it again). It really caught fire and the interest was there. I anticipate this being something that we try to do on an annual basis.”

The league’s focus will now be on the All-Star tournament which began action this week.

Things will be a bit different than years past, as only the 12 year olds will be able to compete regionally and bid for a chance to travel to Williamsport.

“The All-Star experience has changed a lot. The 9 and 10 year olds only play up to the state level then everything stops. I feel bad for those kids that won’t be getting that opportunity to play at the regional level and possibly beyond. It’s disappointing for sure,” said Piscopiello.

Piscopiello added: “Our 12 year old team is the one that won regionals back in 2019 so there are some pretty big expectations there. We will see what we have out there, but the kids just need to keep working hard. We have a good program with three great coaches in Gary Bucci, James Sweeney and Anthony Simeone. It’s going to be fun to see how far we can take it.”

As the league gets set for another summer of fun, Piscopiello and company are simply excited to give the kids an opportunity to enjoy the complete Little League experience.

“It’s important because you’re only 11 once, you’re only 12 once, this is an experience that you can’t get back,” said Piscopiello. “That’s how it is every level through high school and college. You only get that opportunity once.”
