10-U All-Stars wrap up summer tournament

The Cranston Western Little League 10-year-old All-Stars wrapped up their summer last week, going 1-1 in their final two games of the regional tournament played up at Hope Road.

CWLL was in a must-win game on Wednesday but fell 7-0 to Massachusetts to be eliminated from title contention. However, the team got to play one last game on Thursday and would roll to a 7-1 win against New Hampshire.

“In the tournament, as a whole, we played really well. The four teams we faced in the tournament were the four best teams that we saw this summer and there was some early trouble with shaking off the nerves. In (the New Hampshire game), once they knew that they were eliminated, they played much looser and we got to end our summer on a good note. The week was fun and the kids had a blast,” said CWLL coach Sean Hart.

CWLL would break things open by scoring four runs in the third to go up 4-0. The 10’s would then extend their lead to 7-0 with three more runs in the seventh which would be enough to hold onto the win.

Ashton Pelagali, Aydenn Reyes, Nazlin Benzan and Thomas Glasgow would all knock in runs for CWLL. Kameron Monahan also picked up two hits at the plate.

Nolan Winters got the win on the mound, pitching all six innings and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six batters.

“We just tried to keep things as loose as possible because once it is locked in that you aren’t playing in the championship, it then becomes all about making memories. Knowing that, they played super well and were happy to finish on a high note. I am proud of them,” Hart said.

The team is set to return five players next season with the rest moving up to the 11-year-old division. Hart hopes that this taste of regional play will pay dividends for the next time around.

“The biggest thing that they’ll take from this experience is perspective when seeing where they stack up against other teams in New England. Regardless of how they finished, they were the third best team in New England. That’s a huge accomplishment. They played some good teams with big kids and now they know what they need to do to raise their game to that next level. Then hopefully they will be able to get over the hump the next time they’re in a situation like this,” said Hart.

The league was also thrilled to see another one of its teams win a state title and keep CWLL atop the state for another summer.

“This team put the league in a great position in terms of what the All-Star program looks like. For these kids to win a state championship in their very first crack at All-Stars, huge kudos to them,” Hart said. “The league really rallied around them, especially this week being home at regionals, you could feel that energy and support.”
