By ALEX SPONSELLER After rolling to an undefeated district championship, the Cranston Western 11’s would continue to dominate and went undefeated at states, beating Warwick Continental American in the final game and winning the title last week.

CWLL started things off with a big 13-4 win over Bristol and would top Lincoln 5-2 to advance to the championship game.

Although WCA was able to hold the score to a 1-1 into the final inning, CWLL would score two runs to wrap up the victory.

“It was great especially considering they didn’t have the chance to do it last year. It was a new experience for most of them. They just worked well together and supported one another. There was no bickering, they just went out there and did what they had to do and got the job done,” said CWLL coach Wayne Jacques.

After nearly two years apart from one another, the CWLL 11’s needed to shake off some of the rust in the early going this summer. However, their resiliency and belief in one another helped them come together and improve each passing game in each tournament.

“They were a little shaky at first, but as we continued to practice they started to gel. From there, their confidence level went up. If they made a mistake, they wouldn’t get down on each other, they would bring each other up and just keep going,” said Jacques.

Unfortunately for the 12’s, their season was cut short when they fell in the District I final against North Providence last month. Next year should provide them another chance as a few players are set to return and of course, most of this year’s state champion 11’s will be making the move up.

“They are going to be set up very well for next year. The 12’s already had a few 11’s playing that could have been with us, so to have them back plus these additions, they are going to be in good shape,” said Jacques.

With another summer of Little League baseball in the books, Jacques and his staff were happy to see the kids gets back out there and to take home the league’s first championship in the 11 year old bracket.

“This is a big deal because it is the first time that the 11’s ever won states. I think it is a great thing for the state and a great thing for our league,” Jacques said.
