West volleyball tops rival East

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Cranston West girls volleyball team cruised past rival Cranston East in three sets last week to win its opener, 3-0.

“They were excited. They were a little nervous in the first game and fell behind. East has a strong history since (Coach) Meg (McGonagle) has been coaching. They have been one of the top teams in DI in the past few years, so it was good to get a win against them. They savored that victory,” said West coach Tom Ferri.

The Falcons, who reached the playoffs in last spring’s shortened season, followed up the opening day win with a 3-1 victory against Mount St. Charles on Monday evening to improve to 2-0.

Although Ferri is happy to see the club start strong, he hopes to see the Falcons continue to work hard to improve in a few areas moving forward this fall.

“Obviously winning the first two games is a good thing. It’s good for their morale. We have a few things that we’ve got to get better at. We need to work on our consistency,” Ferri said. “I’ve seen a lot of good things early, we’re balanced as a team in our attack, but we have to hit with more power.”

West also has an experienced bunch this fall, returning much of the same core from last season with multiple girls boasting varsity experience since 2019.

The Falcons will also run a new offense this year, using a 6-2 formation instead of the 5-1 that they’ve used in past years.

“Last year was sort of a lost year for us since we only played four games, so we have some lost time to make up, but they’re working hard. Some of them have been starting since they were sophomores,” said Ferri. “They have that experience of playing at the varsity level. We have a lot of flexibility in this offense, we have flexibility in this lineup that we haven’t had in years past.”

West will next take on Cumberland on Friday evening. The Bolts fell to Cumberland in their second game on Monday and looked to get in the win column on Wednesday when they faced East Providence. The results were not available at press time.
