For the first time in nearly a year and a half, Cranston’s City Council returned to City Hall’s Council Chambers for its regular monthly meeting on Monday.

The return to in-person meetings has been in the works for several months and became a necessity with the expiration of a gubernatorial executive order allowing for wholly virtual meetings. But the council will continue to stream its meetings on YouTube and provide a means for members of the public to participate virtually. A new video monitor has been installed in Council Chambers as part of the hybrid setup.

Monday’s meeting – which was preceded by a gathering of the council’s Ordinance Committee – also saw Mayor Ken Hopkins in attendance. He sat with other members of his administration and at one point addressed the council during a debate over a Canvassing Department appointment. He is pictured speaking as Council President Chris Paplauskas and Stephen Angell, the council’s legal adviser, look on.

A schedule of upcoming council meetings, and agendas as they are posted, can be found via the calendar on the city’s website, cranstonri.gov. Monday’s meetings can also be viewed on the “City of Cranston Council” YouTube channel.
