Community Meeting with Warwick Police

There will be a community meeting with Warwick Police at 6 p.m. on Sept. 12 in City Council Chambers (3275 Post Road, Warwick). The purpose of the meeting is to discuss recent break-ins to vehicles in the community and receive updates and suggestions from police on how best to protect ourselves from this type of crime. Oakland Beach Association Meeting

The Oakland Beach Association will meet at 6 p.m. on Sept. 8 at the Boys & Girls Club, 340 Oakland Beach Ave., side entrance. The guest speaker will be Aaron Coutu, new director of the Warwick Public Library. Come and hear about his plans for library services, ask him questions and welcome him to the neighborhood. All Oakland Beach residents are invited. Refreshments will be served.


Cleanup at Oakland Beach’s 9/11 Memorial

Westbay Community Action’s Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) will host a clean-up at Oakland Beach’s 9/11 Memorial and coastline. The clean up will take place Sept. 9 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will begin at the 9/11 Memorial with remarks from Warwick Representative Camille Vella-Wilkinson, a member of RI House of Veteran’s Affairs Committee, and Warwick School Committee Chairperson Judy Cobden, a 9/11 survivor. In addition to the coastal clean-up, we’ll be beautifying the memorial with additional plants to prepare for memorial ceremonies that will take place on 9/11/22. All ages are welcome, and supplies will be provided.


Norwood Neighborhood Association to welcome RI Attorney General

The Norwood Neighborhood Association will hold a meeting on Sept. 14 at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, at 42 Frederick St., at 7 p.m.  RI Attorney General Peter F. Neronha will be the guest speaker. In order to better serve the community, he is bringing his office to the community. He will review new potential threats advising all of the association from the Covid threat, scam threats and other community topics of concern. Neronha is always eager to partner with the community groups to share resources that support groups that keep neighborhoods safe and informed. All are welcome and please plan to attend. Refreshments will be served.


Capturing the Past Plein Air

The East Greenwich Art Club is having a Plein Air event, “Capturing the Past,” at the New England Wireless & Steam Museum (1300 Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich 02818) on Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All artists are invited to spend the day painting or drawing or choose whatever medium to create a work of art. The building has historical buildings, industrial machines and communication equipment.  A $10 donation to the museum is payable on the day of the event. Bring your own lunch. Drawing the Line

Join East Greenwich Art Club at the East Greenwich Recreation Center, 1127 Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich, for its “Drawing the Line,” workshop on Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local, professional artist, Mi Ok Song will be the instructor. Her drawings of the human figure and animals are done with colored pens on paper. They reflect the harmony between humans and nature in a whimsical, representational and playful manner. Using pencils, pens, charcoal, colored pens and colored pencils, on paper, you will learn how to draw a definitive, confident line to create a drawing. Song will discuss how to utilize composition, prospective, proportion and negative space. She will also discuss values, darks, lights, shadows, foreground, middle ground and background. You will also learn how to create animals, objects, portraits, self-portraits and landscapes.


Painting With Gouache

East Greenwich Art Club will hold a “Painting with Gouache” workshop at the East Greenwich Recreation Center, 1127, Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich. This two-day workshop will take place Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon and on Oct. 1 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Contemporary realist, Lorena Pugh, will spend the first day instructing how to use gouache, an opaque, watercolor medium. Participants will do practice experiments to get a feel for and create a small painting. The second day will be working in the plein air park area behind the East Greenwich Recreation Center. In case of inclement weather, we will work from a still life inside the building, using black boxes. Participants may bring whatever still life items they want to paint.


RI Art Educators Exhibit

The Rhode Island Art Educators Exhibit will run from Aug. 27 to Sept. 24 at the Warwick Center for the Arts (3259 Post Road, Warwick). This second annual Rhode Island Art Educators Exhibit is an opportunity for students, colleagues, patrons, friends and family to recognize and celebrate Rhode Island’s Art Educators’ own art. Bowl For Kids’ Sake

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island (BBBSRI) will host its annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake (BFKS), on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lang’s Bowlarama in Cranston.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake is the fun and easy way for individuals and companies to make an impact on the local community — it only takes a little bit of effort to raise the money that is vital to our program’s success. Fundraising teams collect donations and then celebrate their success by attending a local bowling party.

There are two ways to support Bowl For Kids’ Sake: One, individuals can sign up in teams of five to participate in a private bowling party, and raise donations from family, friends and colleagues leading up to the event — with a fundraising goal of $100 for each participant ($500 per team). Free Teacher Assistant Training Program

The Comprehensive Community Action Plan is holding a free, virtual teacher assistant training program from Oct. 17 to Oct. 27. Individuals must be 18 to 24 years old, have a high school diploma or GED and a clean BCI. The classes run from noon to 3 p.m. Individuals, if eligible, can get paid to attend class. Bring Your Own Improv Youth Workshops

Bring Your Own Improv and the Warwick Center for the Arts have a common interest in educating youth. It is with that in mind that BYOI created a program in 2014 for teens, to teach them improv as well as self-confidence and problem-solving skills. The Youth Collective meets every Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Warwick Center for the Arts. For each two-month session, youth take four weeks of workshops followed immediately by four weeks of shows.

Youth must be between the ages of 13 and 18 and no previous experience is required. Parental permission is required. The $245 fee must be paid in order to hold a youth’s spot. The workshops include lessons, the shows and free admission to the 7 p.m. shows for participants. WCFA Members may purchase the workshops at a rate of $195. Memberships are $35 for an individual and $50 for a family of four. Please contact us about becoming a WCFA Member today. This will be the last session offered until January 2023. West Bay Chorale Celebrates 42nd Concert Season

West Bay Chorale will kick off its fall 2022 season on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m., with registration starting at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at St. Kevin Church (333 Sandy Lane, Warwick). Current singers as well as those interested in joining the Chorale are invited to register and learn the details of the upcoming concert season. Information regarding Covid-related rules will be shared. Artistic director Eric W. Van Dervort and the chorale’s board of directors will lead the meeting. All current singers and those interested in joining must be vaccinated and boosted as recommended and everyone must show proof of vaccination. Masks will either be required or recommended, depending on Covid trends. In particular, we are seeking Tenor and Baritone voices. Annual Apple Festival

The annual apple festival at Johnston Memorial Park (1583 Hartford Ave., Johnston) will take place Sept. 10 and Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event will feature Artisan Row, handcrafted items, pony rides and more. Free and open to the public.


Vision of Hope Cancer Walk

The thirteenth annual three-mile fundraising walk to benefit women with gynecological cancer and their families will be held, rain or shine, on Sept. 11 at Warwick City Park on Asylum Road in Buttonwoods. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. Proceeds go to the “Women in Need Fund” and the “Integrative Care Services Fund” programs at Women and Infants Hospital in memory of Kerri McClean who succumbed to a five-year battle with cervical cancer in 2009. Beer Garden at Garden City Center

Join Garden City Center at the gazebo for a rotating lineup of local breweries on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 2 through Oct. 2. Newport Craft Brewing will be there Sept. 2 through Sept. 5, Whaler’s Brewing Company will be there Sept. 9 through Sept. 11, Grey Sail Brewing will be there from Sept. 16 to Sept. 18, Narragansett Beer will be there from Sept. 23 to Sept 25 and Proclamation Ale Company will be there Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. On Fridays, the beer garden will be open from 4 p.m.t o 8 p.m. On Saturdays, it will be open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays it will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. On Labor Day, they will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The beer garden is open to the public – no cover charge. Customers must show a valid ID in order to purchase an alcoholic beverage.


19th Century Music Concert

Join the Providence Brigade Band for a living history concert at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10 at the Church of the Ascension (390 Pontiac Ave., Cranston). The concert will feature 19th century music performed on antique instruments. All proceeds will benefit the Church of the Ascension. Tickets are $10 at the door and include light refreshments.



Narragansett Bay Chorus

The Narragansett Bay Chorus (NBC) presents American A Cappella at the McVinney Auditorium, 43 Dave Gavitt Way in Providence on Sept. 11 at 2:30 pm. The show features appearances by the Coastline Show Chorus (Sweet Adelines International), Harmony Heritage Chorus (Harmony Incorporated) and four quartets: Second Nature, Nantucket Sound and Generations.


Conimicut Village Yard Sale

The annual Conimicut Village-Wide Yard Sale is scheduled for Sept. 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (rain date is Sunday Sept. 18). All you do is set up at your home and keep your profits. OLLI Classes for Adults 50+

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Rhode Island continues its registration for the fall semester. OLLI at URI provides classes for adults aged 50 and better. Library looking for podcast geeks

Are you a fan of listening to podcasts? Do you have a lot of technical skills you would like to apply to a great community resource? The library has its own weekly podcast, Warwick Radio Online, and is building a team to help run it.

Warwick Radio Online (https://warwicklibrary.org/warwick-radio-online-4) highlights the wonderful things that make Warwick great from community resources to opportunities for entertainment to the background and history of the city. They are looking for folks who would like to be technicians to operate the recording studio and edit episodes of the show, on-air talent to serve as hosts of episodes, or managers to supervise and schedule podcast episodes. Those interested can serve in one or all of these roles. Tasks could include recording content in the studio, hosting/co-hosting, interviewing, scriptwriting, editing sound, and experience with Apple computers and the GarageBand audio-editing software. Experience would be helpful, but the library can also help you learn the skills you would need to work on the podcast.

Pasta Dinner

There will be a pasta dinner at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (111 West Shore Rd., Warwick) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 17.  The menu includes pasta, homemade sauce, meatballs, sausage, salad, bread, assorted desserts, coffee, tea and water. Soda will be available for an added cost. The cost for adults is $12.00, children (6-11) are $6 and kids 5 and under are free. There will be a 50/50 Raffle and the church is handicap accessible. Rising Leader Scholarship

Apply for the R.I.S.E. leadership scholarship – funds can be applied to tuition, textbooks or graduate exam application fees. An applicant must be the following: a woman residing in the United States as of Jan. 1, 2022; a high school senior or first year college student with a 3.0 minimum GPA; and an individual who is able to demonstrate personal commitment to serving as a leader in their school, extracurricular activities or community. Five winners will be chosen. They will receive a $1,000 scholarship, networking and mentoring opportunities and opportunities to serve as a brand ambassador. Greek Festival

The Church of the Annunciation will hold its Greek Festival from Sept. 9 to Sept. 11. There will be authentic Greek food, Greek music and dancing and Odyssey Dance Troupe performances. There is free admission and the event will take place at 175 Oaklawn Ave. The festival will be open the following days/times: Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Additionally, there will be free shuttle buses running from Cranston West.


Volunteer with Westbay Community Action

Do you have a passion and desire to make a difference in your community? Westbay Community Action’s ‘Marketplace,’ the second largest food pantry in RI, needs volunteers who are interested in a fun and rewarding experience working with like-minded people. Volunteers 17 years or older will be stocking shelves, unpacking trucks and helping individuals with picking up their food. Bowlers Needed

The Warwick Men’s Church Bowling League is in need of some new bowlers. The league was established in 1951 and is still bowling duckpin at the Meadowbrook Bowling Alley in Warwick. The group bowls on Tuesday nights from September until April. A weekly fee of $15 provides three games of bowling, small events and a banquet at the end of the season with cash prizes. No More Hunger Walk

A walk to call attention to food insecurity will be held Oct. 15. Last year, over $10,000 was raised. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (111 West Shore Road, Warwick). Exhibit of Commemorative Ceramics

Currently on display at Clouds Hill Museum in Warwick is a collection of commemorative and souvenir ceramics. Intern Wren Joyrich has gathered dozens of pieces collected by the many generations of the family of Clouds Hill and created an exhibit for all to see. Caregivers

Are you caring for someone with dementia who exhibits difficult to manage behaviors? You may be eligible to participate in a research study seeking advice and feedback from caregivers about what types of supports are needed. Enrolled participants will be compensated for their time. Take Off Pounds Sensibly

Take off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) #38 in East Greenwich has returned to having meetings every Thursday morning at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (99 Pierce St., East Greenwich) at the lower level. The meeting will be ongoing. Weigh-in begins at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at 10 a.m.

WVMHS ’72 reunion

The Warwick Veterans Memorial High School Class of ’72 will celebrate its 50th reunion on Sept. 17 at the Potowomut Golf Club (439 Ives Road, East Greenwich). Collectable Car Show

Tri City Elks Lodge 1915 W. Shore Rd. Warwick presents a Custom Collectible Car Show on Thursdays at 5 p.m. around the back of the lodge. Bring your auto and show it off or just come and enjoy the night. There will be music and food for sale and the Tiki Bar will be open for beverages! Homecoming Celebration

St. Francis Xavier Academy Alumnae Association (SXA) announced its Homecoming celebration will be Oct. 23 with an 11 a.m. mass at St. Timothy Church, Warwick, followed immediately by lunch at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick. The Rhode Island Blood Center is in need of blood. Individuals wishing to donate must book an appointment at the donation center; walk-ins are only accepted if safe distancing allows at the person’s time of arrival. Be Kind RI

Be Kind RI is a new program that connects volunteers to their neighbors across RI through text alerts to coordinate food deliveries from grocery stores and food pantries. To sign up go to www.BeKindRI.org. Volunteers must be 18 or older and undergo our background check. Be Kind RI is open to those in RI experiencing COVID-19 risk factors including seniors 65+, anyone with underlying health conditions, those in quarantine or isolation, anyone experiencing a lack of childcare, and those who would otherwise experience difficulty in obtaining food. Meals on Wheels in Need of Volunteers

Meals on Wheels of RI is in immediate need of volunteers for its Home-Delivered Meal Program in Warwick. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The program helps homebound seniors remain healthy, safe and happy at home. ESL classes at WPL

The Warwick Public Library and the RI Family Literacy Initiative host English as a Second Language (ESL) classes starting on Sept. 20. Practice your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in small groups. Citizenship Prep Classes at WPL

Prepare for the U.S. Naturalization Interview with Citizen Preparation classes at the Warwick Public Library. Practice citizenship vocabulary, learn the necessary civics content, and work on interview skills using the N-400 application form. We Make RI, an organization that provides free manufacturing training, is hosting a series of job fairs every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at their offices at 200 First Ave. in Cranston. We Make RI offer job seekers a chance to meet with employers, get career counseling, resume help and more. Warwick Center for the Arts will host “Abstract Intuitive Painting” on the first Thursday of October, November and December from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Individuals will learn to select colors intuitively and apply various textures and marks to a wood panel using a variety of materials to create an 11x14 abstract acrylic painting on a wood panel.
