Coffie to play for nearby PC

Pilgrim senior Alanna Coffie made her college decision official, signing her National Letter of Intent to play Division I soccer for nearby Providence College next fall.

Coffie has been a staple in the Pilgrim lineup over the past few seasons and helped the Pats reach the Division I playoffs for the past two years, including a state title appearance her junior year. The standout midfielder was named to the RI Girls Soccer Coaches’ Association’s All-State team this past fall and led Pilgrim with 22 goals to go along with a team-leading 12 assists.

“I was really relieved, it felt good to commit so now I don’t have to worry about it anymore, it felt really good. Obviously the education is very good (at Providence College), the soccer program is very good. I wanted to stay close to home too, that was a big factor in it,” said Coffie.

Coffie expects to face some of the country’s best talent at PC, but feels that going through the tough Division I high school slate throughout the last two years has prepared her for what’s to come.

“I expect better competition, but the competition that I faced in high school was very good. Teams like La Salle and those other schools. Being in Division I showed me what college is going to be like,” said Coffie, who will focus on her strength and conditioning prior to next fall. “I’m probably going to get more physically fit and stronger to compete with bigger girls. What I am most looking forward to is stepping my game up, being at the higher level and being more competitive and physical. I’m looking forward to seeing if I can compete with them.”

After four years and countless moments, Coffie is going to miss playing for the Pilgrim program … where she will be leaving a legacy of success as one of the decades’ best players.

“We are a very close-knit family, so I am going to miss the bonds that I have created with them. I’m also going to miss (Pilgrim) Coach Tom (Flanders) because he has been with me ever since I was little,” Coffie said. “It is very special to be part of Pilgrim. Many of the girls that I played with I was with since I was 6 years old, so being with them has been very special.”
