The Chamber Orchestra of Barrington at St. John’s, conducted by Edward Markward, will present its opening concert of the 2022 – 2023 season on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Barrington, 191 County Road in Barrington, RI.  Jane Murray, English horn, is the featured soloist.

Ms. Murray has held the solo English horn chair with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, since 1978.   Her many solos have been hailed in the press  as “elegant”, “haunting”, “wistful”, “beguiling”, “spellbinding” and “scrumptious”!  Long a champion of oboe d’amore and English horn, she has premiered several new works for the deeper oboes  and was a recipient in 2012 of a RI State Council  for the Arts Grant for a series of concerts of music  for English horn and organ performed in several of the area’s magnificent churches.  She will perform Gordon Jacob’s Rhapsody for English horn and Strings and American composer Jennifer Higdon’s haunting Soliloquy, also for English horn and strings.

Other works on the program are W.A. Mozart’s witty Overture to “The Impresario” and Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 4 in C Major, the “Tragic,” composed when Schubert was 19.  Although composed in a “Classical” mold, this work marks a turn toward the Romanticism to come in his orchestral works.

COBSJ will adhere to all CDC and RI Department of Health regulations and recommendations for safely convening a concert during the Covid-19 pandemic.  All audience members will be required to wear masks and show proof of being fully vaccinated including a booster shot, if eligible.

The concert is free, donations are welcome.
