To the Editor:

As a resident of District 15 in Cranston I was happy to support Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung against Nick Mattiello, but I had no idea she would turn out to be Rhode Island’s version of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Fenton-Fung has supported key Democratic legislation and appears to be a strong ally of Speaker Shekarchi as it is clear that her victory has greatly enhanced his political career. She doesn’t even caucus with her fellow Republicans.

We elect government officials to represent “we the people” in legislation that will benefit and enhance our lives. The new Act on Climate law, which she fully supported, will do anything but that. This law puts key decisions in the hands of the Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council, not our elected officials, to draft, refine and target the bills “goals,” which is to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

These will be incremental and financially burdensome requirements for both residents and business owners of the state in order to convert our heating systems and vehicles to “green” technology. Yes, as good stewards of natural resources and our environment, we should address issues that negatively impact those things but with responsible and financially sound mitigation.

How will the average person be able to convert existing heating and cooling systems to meet these standards? The cart has been put before the horse in that there has been no cost analysis done to know what the bottom line is and just what the residents of Rhode Island will be paying to foot the bill. Fenton-Fung and the Democrats were all too happy to quickly ram this through in the middle of a pandemic no less. She is clearly not a Republican.
