Celebrating a century

Tenants at the Greenwood Terrace wouldn’t let their senior resident celebrate her 100th birthday without a party, or for that matter, a grand entrance with her wearing a crown once Mayor Frank Picozzi and her son-in-law, Rep. David Bennett, were in the dining room. Mary Gatta grew up in Cranston, moving to Warwick about 30 years ago. Married to the late Christie Gatta, a salesman for Narragansett Brewery, the couple had two daughters, Ann Bennett and Joan Bicknell. Mary is the grandmother of Rick and Kevin Bicknell and their sisters Sherry and Geriann; eight great grand children and one great great grandson. Mary, who had eight siblings enjoys bingo and crocheting, retired from Leviton Manufacturing. “She is the perfect mom,” Ann said of her mother. As for Mary’s reaction to the celebration, “it was a great party with dinner, balloons and a cake… we had a good time.” She is seen here with Rep. David Bennett and Mayor Frank Picozzi. Both of them presented her with proclamations commemorating the event. (Warwick Beacon photo)
