Celebrating 100 years

For the last 100 years, Confreda Greenhouses and Farms has served the Rhode Island community and beyond. The farm celebrated its centennial on Sept. 17 with free hot dogs and ice for guests, free giveaways and an appearance from local vendors. The business also had specials – rib eye steaks for $5.99 per lb. and chicken wings for $1 per lb. Jonathan Confreda said the farm expected around 200 visitors but received over 1,000 guests. Additionally, the store’s fridge – which was half-filled with chicken wings – sold out in the first two hours.

According to the farm’s website, the Confreda family began farming in 1922. Farming just over 400 acres of land in Cranston and Warwick, their operations represent one of the oldest and largest commercial vegetable farms in the state. During the 1970s, Vinny Confreda created a bedding plant division – which led to growing 90 varieties of vegetables, 75 varieties of hanging plants and over 90 varieties of specialty products. Their Farmer’s Market and Garden Center opened in 1997 and modeled the facility after a classic family farm. (Photos by Steve Popiel)
