To the Editor,
Let me preface the following with this- I fully agree that our children need a good education in the best schools we can provide. My following opinions do not change that fact. I am opposed to the means to make that happen.
My objection is to the cost to us taxpayers. With a projected cost of three hundred fifty million dollars, (which may be more as supplies continue to escalate), two hundred million dollars will be paid by the tax payers.
I am a senior citizen and on a fixed income. All the years in Warwick I have paid my taxes which included a percentage for schools. I did this without complaint. Now under Mayor Solomon my taxes went up $400.00 per year as the value of my 100-year-old house increased. Now we are getting ready for a new reevaluation which may mean increase in my taxes. Even getting a circuit breaker relief I still have a worry about being able to continue paying my taxes. In this time with out of control inflation, with food and energy increases, is this the time to inflict more expenses on the taxpayers? I would like to see if there is any way to make improvements to our current schools before we decide to build two new schools. I tried to do research on the number of children enrolled in our schools but couldn’t find that out. Is it increasing or decreasing? These are questions the powers in charge should be looking into.
To conclude, I hope those who will be making these decisions to build 2 new schools will think of the taxpayers. I have to think each day if I should try to sell my house and find other living arrangements and leave an area I love or wait until I am unable to continue paying high taxes. I hope you all will find the best solutions for our schools and our taxpayers.
