Brysen Boyd to serve as Epic Theatre Company's playwright-in-residence

Posted

For the first time in its nearly 10-year history, Epic Theatre Company has created the position of a playwright-in-residence. After an open call where the organization received dozens of submissions from playwrights all over the country, Epic has selected Brysen Boyd to join its team for the 2021-22 season.

“Brysen is a unique and engaging voice that will fit perfectly with the kind of theatre we do here at Epic,” artistic director Kevin Broccoli said. “I’ve been an admirer of his work for years, and the opportunity to collaborate with him to create a production for our mainstage while also bringing his voice and perspective to our audience is something I’m looking forward to as we plan next season.”

Brysen Boyd is a playwright and essayist. He is currently a writing fellow on HBO’s “Succession.” He has received fellowships/scholarships from The Kennedy Center, Sewanee Writers Conference, Columbia University, HBMG Foundation National Playwrights Retreat, Napa Valley Writers Conference, Performing Arts Initiative for Students of Color, and elsewhere. His plays have been presented in part with The Boston Theater Marathon, the Kennedy Center, Kansas City Melting Pot, Horizon Theater-Atlanta, and others. His nonfiction has most recently appeared in the Florida Review.

Having come to playwriting and creative nonfiction in undergrad by way of his first love, TV, his goal in life is to write stories that make others feel as excited as 10-year-old him felt when watching David and Keith on “Six Feet Under.” Writing means everything to him – second only to his miniature wiener dogs, Simon and Alvin. He is a graduate of Boston College and has an MFA from Columbia University.

The playwright-in-residence will have their work featured on the mainstage in the winter/spring of 2022. They will also have access to Epic’s resources to workshop and host public and private readings of new work. Boyd will be working closely with the theatre’s artistic staff as they create an original piece for the season.
