WASTING NO TIME: Fourth grader Jackson Marcotte pens his name into the dictionary given him and Sherman School classmates by the Rotary Club of Warwick.

MAKING THE ROUNDS: Rotary Club of Warwick president Steve Hinger, who started the club’s dictionary project and continues to run it today handed out the books to Sherman School third and fourth grade students last Wednesday. Club members fanned out to make deliveries at the city’s other elementary schools.

YOU COULDN’T PRONOUNCE IT: Third graders at Sherman School that is now housed at the former Gorton Junior High School as renovations are completed to the school, were excited to discover the longest word in the dictionary that filled an entire page. Neither Mayor Frank Picozzi, teachers or students even attempted to pronounce it.

LEARNING SIGN: Sherman third grader Siobhan Hankes and Sherman School Principal Charlee McElroy practice letters as illustrated in the sign language chapter in the dictionary. The book also contains a glossary of practical information from the names of US presidents to states and their capitals to measurements and noteworthy historical dates.

As it has done for years, the Rotary Club of Warwick has distributed free dictionaries to all third graders in Warwick – more than 1,000 of them. This year it was double the amount, not because there are that many more third grades but because last year at this time classes were remote. So, this year the club gave the dictionaries to third and fourth graders. The dictionaries were delivered to the city’s 13 elementary schools as well as parochial and private schools. The students, who write their names in the books, get to keep them. And as the service club has learned, years later they are still in use in high school and even college. (Warwick Beacon photos)
