Due to COVID-19, the annual Hope for the Homeless Summer BBQ was canceled last year for the first time in a decade.

This past Sunday, the community returned strong to Praise Tabernacle Church, located at 330 Park Ave. in Cranston, with the Rhode Island Dream Center, Plates for Purpose and the MAE Organization for the Homeless. These nonprofits continue to create positive vibrations throughout the state by helping its most vulnerable population.

Volunteers from throughout the community served more than 150 people food and clothing with hope, kindness, conversation and a smile. This was the ninth year the culinary team at the Thirsty Beaver Hometown Pub & Grub, led by chef Andrea Leonardo, volunteered their time and donated delicious meals with the help of Newport Lemonade and Warwick Ice Cream.

“Every year, this day of hope is a truly a uplift for our community, and we truly enjoy the opportunity to give back to those in need while enjoying the little moments and conversations we share together,” said Ed Brady, co-owner of the Thirsty Beaver and vice president of the Cranston City Council.

The team at the Thirsty Beaver will also be hosting their annual Thanksgiving Dinner with Praise Tabernacle Church this November for those looking to get involved.

Each year, approximately 4,000 Rhode Islanders will experience homelessness – and that was before COVID-19. During the pandemic, Rhode Island experienced an increase of 70 percent in unsheltered homeless, or those living in places unfit for human habitation.
