Dr. Dorothy Pieniadz stood beaming as she cut the ribbon on Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island’s (BBBSRI) new headquarters in Olneyville’s Rising Sun Mills on Aug. 17. Dr. Pieniadz founded Big Sisters of Rhode Island along with other members of Zonta International in 1966.

“I am so pleased to be included in today’s events. To see the culmination of the work and support of so many people over the past 50 years is astounding. It’s one of the most wonderful days of my life,” said Dr. Pieniadz at the ribbon cutting.

The milestone event was attended by BBBSRI leadership, board members, staff and local community members. Joining Dr. Pieniadz as a longtime supporter of BBBSRI was Clare Kirby, Big Sisters Executive Director from 1985 – 1990. In attendance were Senator Frank Ciccone, Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos, Councilman Oscar Vargas and Councilwoman Nirva Rebecca LaFortune. LG Matos presented a citation to the agency.

Since moving in, BBBSRI has hosted several events in their new space including a Scholarship Impact fundraiser and mentoring activities such as STEM Club and a Paint and Punch.

“We are so proud to stand alongside our founder to cut the ribbon on our new headquarters. This space represents many years of hard work and dedication to young people in our state,” said CEO Katje Afonseca.

BBBSRI is constantly looking to expand its partnerships to better serve Rhode Island. The organization has made its Community Meeting Room available to other non-profits and community groups to use at no cost. BBBSRI encourages any nonprofit group, community groups or other agencies interested in touring the space to contact Katie Dawkins, Development Director at events@BigsRI.org.

BBBSRI creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.
