Heather and Thad Paris from Inspired Yoga & Sound Healing provided a free community “Peace” sound meditation/cleansing Sunday afternoon at Gorton Pond following a cleanup where 12 people volunteered including Council President Steve McAllister and state Rep. David Bennett. Roughly 14 bags of trash consisting of countless cigarette ashes, nip bottles, plastic drink bottles, masks, fishing bobbers, and trash from the road was picked up. Local businesses donating to the event included Sweet Dee’s Cupcakery and Catering, Apponaug Honeydew, People’s Liquor Warehouse, MoonStone Art Studio who all donated gift certificates and items. Friends of Gorton Pond organizer Christine Kellerman said that another clean up may take place in the middle of the summer depending on the condition of the area. The plan is to do one more cleanup in the fall before most of the leaves fall. Friends of Gorton Pond is hopeful to have the swimming area open to the public in the future. “We may not be able to swim in the pond this year, but we are definitely hoping for next year,” said Kellerman.
