Art Educator Showcase

Warwick Center for the Arts (WFCA) is seeking original works for its upcoming RI Art Educator’s Showcase, an exhibition featuring artwork from those individuals who teach art to others. This show is intended to celebrate these educators. This show is open to all art educators in RI, including PreK-12, college/university and adult art education. Works must be original and completed during the last 12 months. Works previously shown by the WCFA will not be accepted. As for fees, RIAEA members can submit up to three images, paid for by RIAEA. WCFA members can submit one image for $15 or two or three images for $35. All others can submit one image for $20 or two or three images for $40. First, second, and third places will receive cash awards. The entry deadline is July 24. For questions, contact Aileen at exhibits@warwickcfa.org or 401-737-0010.


National Night Out

Please join Warwick PD on Aug. 2 from 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for National Night Out. For the first time ever, they will host this community event at Rocky Point Park. This family event will have something for everyone: K-9 demo, SWAT demo, WFD Jaws of Life Demo, Touch-a-Truck, vintage police cars, food trucks, arts and craft vendors and more. Fireworks will be at 9 p.m. and parking/admission is free!


CHSE Class of ‘55
Reunion

Summer Bash

TW Financial Group will hold a summer bash on July 23 from noon to 3 p.m. at 888 Reservoir Ave. The event will feature Poco Loco Taco, pizza, ice cream, music and games.

Grandma Martha

On Aug. 7, at 2 p.m., Flannel Polyester will present a “This Is Your Life” style show honoring the grand old lady of Rhode Island comedy, Grandma Martha. The event will take place at the Comedy Park, located inside the Historic Park Theater and Event Center.

A cavalcade of New England’s comedy greats, along with host Jay Burns, will look back on Martha’s life through laughs, jokes and just a couple of roasts.

For this special show, Martha has requested that we help her friends at the Hope Alzheimer’s Center in Cranston. Proceeds from the afternoon’s raffles and photo opportunities will benefit the Hope Alzheimer’s Center. Tickets are available by going to www.thecomedypark.com.


Pawtuxet Village Concert & Food Trucks

The Warwick Parks and Recreation and Ocean State Food Truck Festivals will host a summer concert and food truck event at the Pawtuxet Village Gazebo on July 30 from noon to 4 p.m. Come hang out in the beer garden and grab some food while listening to the sweet sounds of the Driftwoods band.


Shakespeare under the Stars

What Cheer Shakespeare? Theatre Co. will present Shakespeare under the Stars at Governor Sprague Mansion (1351 Cranston St.). These shows are great for all those who love Shakespeare, and even better for those who struggle with the language. In Act one, the company will perform part of “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged),” that explains all of Shakespeare’s plays in 45 minutes. In Act two, the company will perform a hilarious parody of Hamlet, “Something’s Rotten in the State of Denmark,” written by local playwright Joseph Wallace. The plays will start at 7 p.m. and will run July 22-23, July 29-30 and Aug. 5-6. Tickets are $10; Call 508-933-4233 for more information.


Fiddle N’ Fun

Fiddle N’ Fun will be at Pontiac Free Library on July 30 at 11 a.m. Fiddle N’ Fun is an independent music education program designed for young children (and adult caregivers). Mr. Joel delivers unique, hands-on learning experiences through singing, movement, instruments and more.


Conimicut Village Yard Sale

The annual Conimicut Village-Wide Yard Sale is scheduled for Sept. 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (rain date is Sunday Sept. 18). All you do is set up at your home and keep your profits. The Conimicut Village Association will advertise and publish a map to participating homes. Call 524-8404 or email conimicutvillage@aol.com to get on the map. CHSW Class of ’72 Reunion

Cranston High School West’s class of 1972 will hold its 50th reunion on Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Cranston Country Club. The event starts at 6 p.m. There will be a social hour (cash bar), a buffet dinner and music. Free Canoe Rides

The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council is once again offering free canoe rides on the Woonasquatucket River in Providence on Thursday evenings from 4-6 p.m. throughout July and August. Meet at the Fish ladder at Riverside Park, 50 Aleppo St., Providence. On-site registration is required for adults and children, and all ages are welcome.

The WRWC’s experienced paddle team will guide participants up and down the river for about a 10-minute loop, where you will likely see painted turtles basking on the banks and red-winged black birds flying ahead on this surprisingly peaceful stretch of the river. 

Paddles and life jackets are provided by the organization. Participants must sign a waiver and wear a life jacket in order to ride. All youth must be accompanied to the launch site by a parent or guardian.

This Community Canoe Program is made possible thanks to the generous support of AARP RI and REI COOP.


FOWPS Meeting

Friends of Warwick Ponds will have a 6 p.m. meeting on Aug. 17 at the Warwick Library. This meeting will be available on Facebook; there will be no meeting in July. 


Side by Side Exhibit

Warwick Center for the Arts will hold its Side by Side Invitational Group Art Show from July 23 to Aug. 20. In a time when the importance of unification represents a catalyst toward healing, the idea of residing together as a whole birthed the exhibit “Side by Side.” This exhibit encourages partnership between peoples -- partnerships with the capability to grow through what can be optimistically shared, visually articulated and expressed in a manner of the language we call art. This show is curated and juried by Angel Beth Smith. There will be a public reception on July 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at WCFA (3259 Post Road, Warwick). Free parking is on street or behind building in the parking lot; handicapped entrance at rear of building (call for assistance). The center is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.


JHS Class of ’82 Reunion

Take Off Pounds Sensibly

Take off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) #38 in East Greenwich has returned to having meetings every Thursday morning at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (99 Pierce St., East Greenwich) at the lower level. The meeting will be ongoing. Weigh-in begins at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at 10 a.m.

WVMHS ’72 reunion

The Warwick Veterans Memorial High School Class of ’72 will celebrate its 50th reunion on Set. 17 at the Potowomut Golf Club (439 Ives Road, East Greenwich). The event starts at 6 p.m. and there will be cocktails (cash bar), followed by a buffet dinner. CHSE Class of ’65 reunion

Join the Cranston High School East Class of 65 for a belated 55th reunion on Sept. 17 at the Radisson Hotel (2081 Post Road, Warwick), from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Join the class for dinner, dancing and seeing old friends. Sounds of Korea

Sounds of Korea will take place on Aug. 14 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the McVinny Auditorium in Providence. The event includes traditional music and dance in celebration of Korean Independence Day. Admission if free and Korean food will be served.


Collectable Car Show

Tri City Elks Lodge 1915 W. Shore Rd. Warwick presents a Custom Collectible Car Show on Thursdays at 5 p.m. around the back of the lodge. Bring your auto and show it off or just come and enjoy the night. There will be music and food for sale and the Tiki Bar will be open for beverages! Additionally, Tuesdays are the lodge’s Jeep Night at 5 p.m.  Jeeps and 4x4’s of all shapes and sizes are welcome. The Tiki Bar will be open; food by PB&J’s will be available to purchase.


Class Reunion

The East Providence High School Class of 1972 will hold its 50th reunion on August 14 at the East Providence Yacht Club (9 Pier Road, East Providence). At 1 p.m. there will be a meet and greet, while “Tanya McEntire and the Professors” will provide music from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pub-style food and drinks are available for purchase, and the event is free for all class members and their partners. Old Warwick Grange 41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, nonprofit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values. It’s a place where the whole family can go and grow. Help us to help others.

Homecoming Celebration

St. Francis Xavier Academy Alumnae Association (SXA) announced its Homecoming celebration will be Oct. 23, 2022, with an 11 a.m. mass at St. Timothy Church, Warwick, followed immediately by lunch at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick. This year, due to prior Covid restrictions, the classes of 1970, 71 and 72 will be honored.  Scholarships are announced during lunch.  Alumnae may sponsor students for scholarships to Catholic High Schools. Visiting Nurse Home and Hospice (VNH&H) is asking for individuals to support their hospice programs by giving $20 or more to their Hearts for Hospice campaign. Calling All Cribbage Players

Do you play cribbage? If so, consider joining a small group of cribbage players from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every Friday who meet and play at the East Greenwich Community Center located on Pierce Street in East Greenwich. The Rhode Island Blood Center is in need of blood. Individuals wishing to donate must book an appointment at the donation center; walk-ins are only accepted if safe distancing allows at the person’s time of arrival. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island

BBBSRI has opened a new Donation Drop-Off Center at 993 Oaklawn Ave., in Cranston. BBBSRI’s main headquarters has been located on Pontiac Avenue for 12 years. With its headquarters moved from Providence this November, BBBSRI had to find a new location for its Cranston drop off center.
