Anything Goes.

Well, actually as Pilgrim High School teacher and longtime drama club director Richard Denningham knows, not everything goes this year.

The Pilgrim Players were ready to produce the musical that was a Broadway hit in 1934, in November. The show was going into its final rehearsals, a point said Denninghan when the cast coalesces and there’s a high level of energy,

“At this level (high school theater) it’s about momentum,” he said Monday as students prepared for their first dress rehearsal.

But the show didn’t make the stage in November. Following the school’s homecoming dance with a surge of Covid-19 cases at the school, it was postponed. It was a blow to the Players.

“We lost all of that (the momentum), everything lost its shine,” said Denningham. He said students were upset and angry.

With some members of the cast and stage crew dropping out, Denningham and the Players had to rebuild. Denningham gives the students the credit for pulling things together.

“They made it work,” he said, “they even had rehearsals over Christmas.”

There was no lack of enthusiasm at Monday’s rehearsal. The show includes a lot of dancing and singing – something the cast does remarkably well while being masked. The Players are ready to bring some joy and entertainment at a time when the community mourns the loss of those to Covid-19 and daily faces additional pandemic developments. While the Pilgrim auditorium seats more than 700, Denningham said the audience would be limited to 200 with rows roped off to provide safe distancing.

Anything Goes opens Friday at 7 p.m. The Saturday performance is also at 7, and the matinee and final performance on Sunday is at 2 p.m. Tickets at the door are $12 for adults and $7 for students, seniors and children under 10.
