Angela & Kevin new owners of George's

Posted

For her entire life, Angela Degaitas parents owned Nick & Joans, in the Gateway Plaza.

Now Angela and her husband Kevin Jacob are the owners of George’s Pizza a couple of miles down the road on Warwick Avenue.

But the story of the couple owning their restaurant didn’t start in Warwick, in fact it began 1,400 miles away in Minneapolis Minnesota.

In 2016 Degaitas and Jacob we’re working at Day Block Brewing Company, a brewpub close by to the Vikings Stadium.

It’s when the couple began to talk about owning their own business one day. They knew they wanted to own a business weren't sure what it would be. One of their ideas was a food truck.

“We both love cooking and wanted to run our own place one day,” said Degaitas.

In 2018 Degaitas decided that it was time to move back to Rhode Island with her two children to get help from family. Jacob, a Minneapolis native came with them after working the Super Bowl weekend at the pub.

Fast forward three years and Degaitas was working at Nick & Joans, a place where she grew up sitting next to regular customers like “uncle Ralph” and others who watched Degaitas and her three siblings grow up.

One day a customer showed her an online advertisement for George’s Pizza, knowing that Degaitas’ cousin Maria Boulaxi owned it and that she and Kevin had helped there in the past when an extra hand was needed.

The couple thought about it and as Degaitas explained it she woke up on a random Wednesday morning in November and said,  “Kevin I think we need to buy the pizza shop. I just think we can’t pass this up.”

Kevin agreed and on Dec. 22 they closed on the business three weeks after getting married.

Last week the business had a soft opening. Taking ownership of their business meant the couple’s story came full circle.

The Minneapolis restaurant that they meet in prided themselves on pizza, Angela said.

“We meet around pizza,” said Degaitas.

Their favorite pizza was pepperoni, jalapeno and pineapple.

Degaitas said that they are going to keep a lot of the same menu items but want to add some things to it and to come up with their own spin on things.

“We will absolutely make George's our own while keeping the favorites,” said Degaitas. “Keep an eye out for specials and our new menu coming this spring.”

The business is located at 2910 Warwick Ave.
