‘A beautiful field’

New complex opens doors for town sports

Johnston finally opened its new soccer complex located behind the Indoor Recreation Center and it has been a hit for local teams as they break it in.
It was announced back in 2022 that the town had secured a $1.1 million grant to go toward funding community programs, including the recreation department. That money was used toward a brand new, padded turf soccer complex including the lines and goal posts at field level. The town is still planning on making some smaller additions to the complex, including fencing.
The field opened earlier in October and has been used regularly by the town’s youth soccer programs. The rec department has been working alongside Challenger Sports in organizing youth soccer camps and the field has been a great asset so far.
“It’s been good. We started our soccer program there, we’re in communication with the schools. We are trying to work alongside as many people in the town to get use out of it. It’s a beautiful field, we’ve gotten a lot of compliments on it. Our facilities are very good, some of the best in the state. We want to make it available to as many people in the town as we can,” said Johnston Recreation Director Mike Bedrosian.
Also using the field has been the Johnston Youth Football program, as well as teams from Ferri Middle School and Johnston High School, both for games and practices.
The high school complex is expected to remain intact and in use while the new high school and elementary school are built. The schools are expected to be completed by the 2027-2028 school year.
Bedrosian and the rec department are thrilled to have a new complex to offer the town’s sport scene, especially the youth soccer program which has been expanding fast with Challenger Sports.
“People are happy, that for sure. People were itching to get on it the first Saturday it was open,” Bedrosian said. “We’re trying to expand. (Challenger Sports) has really taken the reins with our younger kids and we want to help them. It’s a relief for us because we know those kids are in good hands.”
