It was March of 2020, and the Toll Gate Drama Club was one week away from performing their spring production.
Then like the rest of the state they got the news. Schools were going to distance learning due to the covid-19 pandemic.
As they say the show must go on and on Friday after two years the Drama Club will be performing Alice in Wonderland in the Robert Shapiro Auditorium.
“We’re lucky to be able to do it, and I’m glad we’re back,” said Matthew Hodge, the co-advisor of the club along with Darlene Netcoh.
Hodge said that because the last production was done three years ago it means that they have only a few “veterans” as a result. Nonetheless, he said that they have a cast of 16 students with speaking roles, and 15-20 students who will be helping backstage and with tech.
“It’s good that we have a good bunch of kids that want to give it a shot,” said Hodge.
Even though the only students to ever perform at the high school level are the juniors and seniors Hodge said that like normal there was no difficulty in finding students interested in being part of the production.
“I’m always amazed you put out the call and you get a room full of kids,” said Hodge.
After deciding on the script during the fall, Hodge said that they began working on the production around Christmas time.
“We have a lot of fun in the process,” said Hodge
Hodge said that this is also the second play that he has been an advisor for. Like some of the students in the production his first opportunity was in 2019. A history teacher, Hodge said that he has always been a supporter of the plays and the arts but never was personally involved. .
It was also pointed out by Hodge that the School District has dropped a mandatory mask policy, and now it is mask optional. He said that there was some concern early on that wouldn’t be the case when the performance happened.
“We were worried about putting on a play with masks,” said Hodge.
Hodge said that the production is about 90 minutes, and is on Friday and Saturday starting at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10, and members of the Toll Gate community can purchase them ahead of time for $7.
