1916 Lecture

The 1916 Committee will present a special conversation with Kathleen Savage, a long time member of the LAOH (Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians) and Irish Northern Aid. During her time with the LAOH, Savage made a number of fact finding visits to Northern Ireland where she visited prisoners held in Long Kesh and participated in demonstrations in Belfast and Derry. She also established close friendships with prisoners’ families.

Savage will share some of her experiences with her audience and her multimedia presentation will be held at the RI Irish Ceilidhe Club, 50 America St., Cranston, on Nov. 4 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The event is open to the public. “Pub grub” is available in the downstairs pub. The kitchen opens at 5 p.m.


Humans of Cranston Nominations

OneCranston Health Equity Zone is starting a new initiative with the Cranston Herald and local photographer Timothy McFate called Humans of Cranston; they will be interviewing Cranston residents to gain a deeper understanding of and celebrate those who live here. Those interviewed will be featured in a new column and on OCHEZ social media. Photography Exhibit

Ed Rondeau, a longtime Edgewood resident and retired Cranston teacher and administrator, will be displaying his photography at the Cranston Central Library, 140 Sockanosset Cross Road, throughout the month of November. Ed’s extensive experience in visual arts – theatre direction, set design, sculptor in steel and now photography continues to demonstrate his love of and commitment to visual art. The exhibit will also include work by his grandson, Nicholas Paolino and longtime friend, Terrence J. Boylan.

Nicholas is a graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School with a B.A. in Graphic Design and M.A. in Communication from Merrimack College. Nick is an experienced photographer, videographer, graphic designer with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry within departments of communication and marketing.

Terry’s 50 year career in education ranged from elementary school principal to university professor. His work in photography has been seen in galleries and shows in Rhode Island, Marblehead and Cape Cod.

The exhibit runs from Nov. 1 to Nov. 29 with a reception on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.


Used Book Sale

The Cranston Public Library’s used book sale returns Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the William Hall Library. Thousands of fiction and non-fiction books, in hardback and paperback, will be available to purchase as well as CDs, DVDs, children’s books, and cookbooks, in excellent condition. All CDs, DVDs, and adult books are $1 and kids & teen books are 50 cents each. Cash is preferred but credit cards will also be accepted. 100 percent of the proceeds from the book sale help support library resources and programs.


Free Vaccine Clinics

The OneCranston HEZ will be hosting two Free Vaccine clinics. One at Central Library on Nov. 2 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. (this will be Flu Shot only) and another on Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 1090 Cranston St. (This will have Covid vaccines, boosters and Flu shots.)


Senior Olympics Swim Meet

The Greater Providence YMCA and Rhode Island Senior Olympics present a swim meet from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 5 at the Cranston YMCA located at 1225 Park Ave. The event is for ages 50+ and is $35. The registration form is available at the organization’s front desk. Individuals may select up to six events.


Holiday Bazaar

On Nov. 5 and Nov. 6, St. Francis Xavier Church will hold a holiday bazaar. There will be a Christmas booth, attic treasures, silent auction, hand knit items, baked goods, kids corner, raffle baskets and more. The event will take place at 81 No. Carpenter St., East Providence. The bazaar runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 5 and from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 6.


Who Dunnit?

Join Clouds Hill Victorian House Museum (4157 Post Road, Warwick) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 5 for a who dunnit mystery. Prohibition has returned to Warwick and the guests at the Slater Club find themselves in the middle of an investigation. Clues and chaos abound. Can you figure out the murder? Admission is $5 per person.


Reading and Discussion

Dr. Mehnaz Afridi, Director of the Holocaust, Genocide & Interfaith Education Center and Professor of Religious Studies at Manhattan College, will join Cranston’s Central Library on Nov. 6 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. to discuss her book “Shoah Through Muslim Eyes.” Dr. Afridi is believed to be the only Muslim teacher of the Holocaust in the United States and, perhaps, the world. This event is presented in collaboration with the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center Baxt Lecture Series, an annual event that brings Holocaust education to the greater Rhode Island community. Candy Cane Bazaar

St. Joseph Church will host a Candy Cane Bazaar on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6. The Bazaar will feature a giant raffle, penny social, baked goods, jams & jellies, gifts in a jar, jewelry, gift baskets, books, puzzles, locally made honey, a “This & That Room,” American Girl Doll clothes, towels, aprons, soaps and oils. The kitchen will be open each day. The bazar will be held from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, at the church. St. Joseph Church is located at 144 Danielson Pike, North Scituate. 


On the Tracks to a Train Show

Rhode Island Model Train Expo sponsored by the Little Rhody Division of the National Model Railroad Association will be held Sunday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Guy L. Lefebvre Community Center, 1277 Main St., Coventry. The show features operating layouts in N, HO, O, and G scales. There will be select vendor tables. Tickets are $6 for adults and children under 12 and Scouts in uniform are free. There is a $20 maximum per family.


Flu Shot Clinic

Cranston Public Schools’ flu shot clinic will take place at Park View Middle School (256 Park View Blvd.) on Nov. 9 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. To register, go to schoolflu.com. If you have insurance, remember to bring your card.

  


Hearing from a Veteran

Join Cranston Public Library at Central on Nov. 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. as Don Mellor, a 101-year-old Cranston native and World War II Navy veteran, talks about his experiences aboard the U.S.S. Hopewell (DD - 681) in the South Pacific during the height of the war. Don will share stories, answer questions, and show several posters of images from his Navy days.

Don is also the subject of a recently published book, “Committed: Lessons from a 101-Year-Old Tin Can Sailor: the Story of Don Mellor,” written by his children. A limited number of copies will be available to give away while supplies last. Register at www.events.cranstonlibrary.org/event/9573604.


Veterans Day Parade

The City of Cranston will once again hold its Veterans Day Parade at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 11. The parade will kick off in front of Legion Bowl on Park Avenue, continue past City Hall up to Heyward Street and past Rolfe Street. A ceremony at the cannon memorial will immediately flood the parade. Any group/organization that wants to march can contact Paul McAuley at pmcauley@cranstonri.org.


Park View Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk

The ninth annual 2022 Park View Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Kids Run, an annual event designed to bring honor and recognition to Veterans Day, will be held at Roger Williams Park on Friday, Nov. 11. Proceeds from the event will benefit programs for the school throughout the year and as a means of giving back to a worthwhile cause, Operation Stand Down RI.

The One Mile Kids Run will take place in the Park on a specially designed course. This race will begin at 8:30 a.m. The race is open to all elementary and middle school students. Cost for this race is $10 (T-shirts to the first 50 entries for this race).

Start and finish of the 5k race at the Park Avenue entrance to Roger Williams Park across from Park View Middle School. The 5k starts at 9:30 a.m.

T-shirts to the first 500 entries for the 5k race. Post-race food and beverages will be served. Awards are given to the top male and female finisher. Awards to the top men and women in each division: 8th grade and under, high school division, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+.

Packet Pick up will be at the Park View Middle School Gym, Thursday, Nov. 10, from 3-5 p.m. Race day registration and pickup begins at 7 a.m.

Veterans’ Day Mass

Mass for Veterans’ Day will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 11 at 12:05 p.m. at Saint Paul Church, One Saint Paul Place, Cranston. The Mass, celebrated by Fr. Thomas Woodhouse, will feature enhanced musical selections played by Music Director Jason Hervieux. Everyone, especially all veterans, are invited and encouraged to attend. Please consider inviting a veteran you know to come to Mass along with you.  Come let us give glory to God and thanks to those who served our great country.

Craft and Vendor Show

St. Mary’s Feast Society Ladies’ Auxiliary will host its annual Holiday Craft and Vendor Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 12. There will be vendors, crafters, handmade items, baked goods, raffles, food and more.

Storytelling and Food

Join the OneCranston HEZ on Nov. 12 at the Central Library from 11 a.m. to noon for a Storytelling and food event. Come join us in hearing stories of food and the importance they have in different cultures from Rochel Garner Coleman of RI Black Storytellers.


Behavioral Health Fair

On Nov. 14, the OneCranston HEZ and the Cranston Public Libraries are hosting a Behavioral Health Fair from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Central Library. Come learn about the different organizations working in Cranston.


Young Musicians Scholarship

The Music on the Hill scholarship directly supports the study of classical music performance. Awards will be disbursed directly to the winner’s designated instructor, ensemble program, summer opportunity, school, conservatory or college music fee. The first prize includes $400 and a performance opportunity in Music on the Hill’s 2023 festival. The second prize is $200. Applicants must be Rhode Island residents between ages 13 and 18. This scholarship includes all instruments and voice. Chamber groups may apply together and share the prize. The application includes a four to eight minute recorded video audition. Photos With Santa

Come visit Santa in his cozy cabin outside the Garden City Center gazebo from Nov. 18 to Dec. 24 for a meet and greet and photo with the most holly jolly guy in the neighborhood. Turkey Trot

St. Mary’s Holy Name Society will host a Turkey Trot at 6 p.m. on Nov. 19 at St. Mary’s School Gym (85 Chester Ave., Cranston). There will be food, drinks, raffles and Turkey bingo. There will also be a Santa’s Helper raffle for a $500 shopping spree.

Join Phillips’ Chime Choir

Phillips Memorial Baptists Church (565 Pontiac Ave.) is looking for children ages six to 10 who are interested in participating in a Chime Choir led by Minister of Music Martha Sobaje. The rehearsals won’t be too long and will occur at 11:15 a.m. after church on Sundays. This is an exciting and fun opportunity to learn music and a great way to meet others. Warwick Center for the Arts will hold “The Winter Market” from Nov. 26 to Dec. 17, Wednesday through Saturday – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3259 Post Road., Warwick. This year’s Winter Market features handmade items from over 20 local artists and represents the varied creativity that makes Rhode Island so special. In addition to handmade jewelry, toys, cards, ornaments, pottery and accessories, the Market will also sell affordable framed paintings, prints and other wall hangings in addition to WCFA gift certificates if you prefer to give the ‘arts experience’ as a holiday gift this year. Need Christmas Help?

Families residing in Coventry, Cranston, Scituate, Warwick and West Warwick in need of Christmas help may apply for assistance from Little Free Pantry in Warwick by Nov. 26. Our goal is to provide one to three items per child: value of your gifts range from $5 to $35 dollars as this is a helping hand. We do our best to help as many as we can, we do not guarantee help. The application process is simple. Please send us a message with the following information.

  1. Your Name, a picture/copy of a recent utility bill in your name (your photo ID will be required at pick up) please block out account numbers, we just need to verify address and name. We can not accept people signing up for others, your Facebook name must be similar to your real name.
  2. For each child up to age 17, Child name (first name only), age, gender and wish list or a list of likes (of mixed value max $35 per item). You must provide a list because we can not fill requests without it. Please note we will consider children over age 17 with special needs, please PM us in regards to our requirements. No requests for gift cards/tickets, as well as any video games/systems (exception would be inexpensive headphones and accessories) will be honored.
  3. List of other programs you have signed up for, or intend to sign up for.
  4. Due to dishonesty about children, we now require birth certificate at pick up, your ID must match one of the parents listed on the birth certificate. Exception for those with legal custody paperwork will be required. This for visual inspection in person only!

While we never ask for income verification and reserve the right to ask for additional information for children as you may only sign up your children that live with you full time. Our pick up location is in Warwick, near RT 37. We provide this information when pick up times are arranged. This is borrowed space afforded to us by a local business in which we are allowed to use after business hours.


Open Juried Exhibit

The Warwick Center for the Arts is holding its 36th annual RI Open Juried Exhibit from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12 at 3259 Post Road, Warwick. The show consists of a variety of media and subject matter and is juried by Paula Martiesian. Martiesian has exhibited extensively around RI and is an award-winning advocate for the arts and artists. Call for Poetry Submissions

Notable Works Publication is working with Crosswinds Poetry on the third edition of “Voices of the Earth: The Future of Our Planet.” The theme is awakening a resolve for rediscovery, resolution, adaption, growth and a call for continued action. Poets accepted for the publication in this book will receive a complimentary copy upon completion. Three prizes will be awarded from entries. ($100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.) Poets may submit up to three original works not previously published, each one formatted in Times New Roman, not exceeding 60 lines (which includes title and any spaces in-between). No more than 66 characters on each line (which includes spaces and punctuation). The submission period runs from Jan. 1, 2023, to Feb. 15, 2023 at midnight. Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Come join the “Rocky Point Pacers” for a walk around Rocky Point every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 9 a.m., weather permitting. They meet at the gate on Rocky Point Avenue.
